Anyone on an 'upto 8Mbps' service will rarely get that bandwidth, except in the middle of the night.

Most connections are asynchronous at (insert your advertised bandwidth here eg 0.5, 1, 2, 4 or 8 etc)Mbps incoming/(256)Kbps outgoing.

Try the bandwidth test in the middle of the evening. You will be shocked!!

Unless you've got a leased line/IP Clear line, you will also be affected by CONTENTION, whic may be 50:1 typically - ie 50 users trying to share the same bandwidth as you.

When running the test, you need to make sure you haven't got anything else using your bandwidth, such as P2P filesharing, a hacker(!!), email or another web page etc...

Mine is currently reporting around 6800/280, which is GOOD for an upto 8Mbps connection at this time of the day. Wait till the kids get home from school...

I'm with Talk Talk free Broadband bundle 8mb, I've never even reached 3mb in the middle of the night. It is Talk Talk so I shouldn't really be suprised.

I've been keeping track on my speeds with another website since May and If anything the speed has decreased over time.

this means you are getting the equivalent of just under a 2mb line speed which is not bad if that is what you are paying for.

2000 is a 2mb line roughly, uploads are not really used unless you are sending files to a web site, not used that often and usually quite lower compared to dwonloads,

  • Yikes, supposed to be getting up to 20meg but just over 5meg is the result - i think a few more tests and if it doesnt improve over time i'll be complaining.
