http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html
i like this and you can rate it and compare against others.have now given up smoking since feb 13th 2014 loving the money I'm saving0 -
all depends on what speeds your phone line can handle....how far away from an exchange etc
BT says my line will only do a max of 2mb...so obviously no point paying for a 10mb, when I wont get anywhere near that.0 -
Download Speed: 475 kbps (59.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

I'm with TalkTalk (oh joy!!) - supposed to up to 8 whatever it is!!

I use this all time, and it always gives me between 1800-2000, i am on a 2mb line and that is the speed I get and pay for.
I use virginmedia (cable) as my provider,
It seems most of the entries on this thread are people who are using ADSL lines, Virgin uses DSL it is much more likley to give you the speed you pay for, you do pay a bit more but you do get what you pay for, I live to far from the exchange and if I was to use adsl(telephone line - BT, Orange etc), i would get about 512kbps download speed at a max, but with virgin I have had a 4mb line and got this speed continuously during the day or night.
For each of your providers you need to check the contention ratio to see what yours is the lower the ratio the less likely your speed will drop, during peak times.
hope this is useful, all this info is available on the thinkbroadband.com website, it is worth looking at.Pigsback - £230 vouchers + £30 wc 28.01.08 + 5000 points waiting/chasing

I can't get it to do the upload test! It just gets stuck at 'preparing upload test'.
Download speed is 3mb. We're paying for 16mb from Sky. Not complaining though, it seems fast enough.:www: :: MFi3 ::

i see the 16mb line is unlimited and 8mb is 40gb allownace if you dont download it would save a bit to downgrade, you would still get the speed you are getting you just would not get the download allowancePigsback - £230 vouchers + £30 wc 28.01.08 + 5000 points waiting/chasing

on this 1 it says im around 3.50meg but the op website says only 725 download  im on talk talk to and they just put new exchange in to improve things?????? not sure it has :rotfl:
when you do the tests they have 2 results per download and upload
first is the speed of the line 3.5mbps
secondly is the max download speed, 725#
these figures would be about right
if you had a 3.5mbps line you would get a download speed of around 700-800kbps
I have a 2mb line and it runs at 2mbps and I get a max download speed of 256kbps, it looks to be about 1/4 of the line speed is the download speed.
this would seem to be true as when i had a 4mb line i could get max download speed of 800-900kpbsPigsback - £230 vouchers + £30 wc 28.01.08 + 5000 points waiting/chasing
