According to Wikipedia, Nissan Sunderland builds around 500k cars per year.

The BBC reports with some fanfare that the investment announced today will allow the Nissan Sunderland factory to produce batteries for around 100k cars per year.

Given we are meant to be going all EV, that hardly seems an over-whelming vote of confidence in EV's driving towards high take-up.

Especially as under the terms of the FTA with the EU this is going to be Nissan's facilities for Europe?

Add to that probably Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova (confirmed) and Balkans (not sure how much is confirmed, but I'd expect EU terms to roll over) under their respective FTAs too.

In other words, 100k batteries a year for a market of around 600 million people......

That would still be only 500k, or 1 vehicle per 1200 people roughly per year, which averaging a car lifespan at 10 years would be around a 2% market share at quick math. Hardly ambitious in the long term with their 'first to market' history.

But in line with their historic output levels at Sunderland. Nissan are behind the.urve in moving from suv where they were one of the first to crossover styling.

I thought Nissan started the crossover trend with the very popular Qashqai and then added the mini crossover Juke.

That was what I thought (after a brief spell with Renault with their weird Scenic thing in the early 2000s) too.

It definitely was the case with mainstream electric cars.

IN my book Qashqai etc are suv styled - boxy faux 4x4 look, whereas the market is now crossover - bmw x4/x6, Merc GLC/GLE etc styling?

OK - internet disagrees with me apparently they are all crossovers but the new styling is called a crossover coupe....
    I think....
