I just entered my figures for usage into Moneysaving experts site 304 kwh for gas a week and 440kwh for Electricity a week which I have taken from my Smart meter and it came up with a cost of £215 pmonth and £2582 per year - something is not right. I pay £80 pmnth with British Gas on Collective Fix February 2017 and they have just reduced that to £70 as I was paying too much.
Either your smart meter is not working correctly or you have miss-read the figures. They look more like monthly consumption, rather than weekly.

Beware this website. MoneySavingExpert. They have given me some completely false info on what energy deals are the cheapest.
I found the cheapest deal was not even listed on their first two pages, and it is a hugely cheaper deal than any they suggested.
There doesn't seem to be any way of contacting them, either. They are faceless.
They are definitely not to be trusted.
Yes, I HAD given them full and correct details about my usage, personal details, etc.

You need to bear these important words in mind now:

MoneySavingExpert.com is part of the MoneySupermarket Group

Energy price comparison websites are becoming increasingly difficult to trust these days, and to rely on just one without checking a couple of others is unwise.

BBC Radio 4's 'Money Box' has been examining some pretty dubious practices lately and they don't come out well. The regulator needs to sort the mess out, but seems actually to be allowing them to get less and less trustworthy.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07wmzx8

Existing energy customers with E.ON, SSE, EDF and British Gas have found themselves locked out of attractively priced tariffs because those deals are only available to new joiners. In 2014, following a series of energy mis-selling scandals, Ofgem created a rule which effectively banned suppliers from excluding existing customers. However in April this year the regulator announced that it no longer planned to enforce that rule, meaning a new generation of tariffs which ignore existing customers have surfaced.

A group comprising some of the UK's main regulators has released its report into price comparison websites. The UK Regulators Network which includes Ofcom, The Financial Conduct Authority and Ofgem found many consumers don't understand exactly how the sites make money from them. It comes as the Competition and Markets Authority launches its own review into whether price comparison sites actually benefit consumers. Adam Shaw hears from Dermot Nolan CEO of Ofgem who is also Chair of the UK Regulators Network.

And the curious case of the company descriptions which appear on one price comparison website which differ depending on if the supplier is paying commission or not.

You can contact them by email: energyclub@moneysavingexpert.com

Bear in mind that CEC must default to presenting comparisons based on the method dictated by Ofgem. You can, however, select an option to have the comparison based on a full year on each of the tariffs.

has anyone had this happen on the cheap energy club site
I chose the tarriff listed on my bill and the unit price is completely different to that quoted on my bill. How can I do a comparison if the unit rates aren't matching up.
I should add that when I go to U-switch and choose the tarriff listed on my bill it matches exactly with what's on my bill.

Are you sure you're not comparing one that shows rates including VAT with one that doesn't?
Besides, there is little point in comparing what you would have paid had you continued on your existing tariff (should it continue for another year or should you go onto the standard variable tariff) with currently available tariffs.
Much more meaningful to compare available tariffs with each other, showing what you will pay for the coming year IF you use the same amount of gas and electricity as you input.

• Strange. I'm also with OVO and have switched to BG with the big switch. Just called them about the smart meters and they said it didn't happen automatically and they had no appointments in my area to come and install their meters (different meters with every supplier!?).

Hello, and welcome to MSE, KevinL :hello:

There are many threads on this board that discuss smart meters, I'm a little puzzled as to why you psoted your comment in the thread about earning cashback when switching

Anyway, you are correct that smart meters are not automatically installed, but you must request them. Also they only work with the supplier that installs them at present; switch supplier and it reverts to a dumb meter so maybe you've had a lucky escape?

Anyway, BG are installing smart meters at present (and have been for a number of years now).
Naturally, with about 10 million customers they are doing it in an organised manner.
If you are eligible for a BG smart meter, then they should make an appointment with you to come and fit it. If you are not currently eligible, then they should put your name on their register of interested customers and contact you again when you become eligible.
Everyone who wants a smart meter should have one by 2020.

If BG have done neither of these, then I suggest you contact them again. :)
