Actually the best way I now find is to compare the daily cost and the unit kwh cost . . .
That is the best way - using a spreadsheet.

The problem, in the greater scheme of things, is the general lack of numeracy skills leaves vast swathes of the public at the mercy of the comparison sites who, in turn, are constrained by Ofgem whose apparent role is to make things as complicated as possible in the name of simplicity.

MSE is, apparently, trying to persuade Ofgem to change the rules which compel comparison sites to quote annual estimated costs based on 6 weeks on a supplier's standards variable tariff before a switch but MSE doesn't give us a clue about what we, the suppliers' customers, can do to give our input.

Is this a subject for an e-petition?

If they're reading this thread, they'll be under no illusion.

In any event, Energyhelpline manages to offer the option of useful figures without having Ofgem change the rules, so MSE/CEC can too!

Can you believe that I have now cancelled the transfer suggested by CEC that they have now given me a new savings of £249 if I switch, this time to Extra Energy
Tariff Extra Energy Fresh Fixed Price Dec 2015 v2 Costs £1,346 per year Saving You £294 per year This is complete rubbish as the cost per kwh with Extra energy is higher than what I pay at present with OVO

BUT, be careful and read the thread elsewhere on this site about problems with Extra Energy. They are cheap, but if you are interested in keeping a check on how much it's costing you my advice would be: don't go there.

I would also like to admit to a mistake when comparing prices for energy as some exclude VAT and some include VAT at 5%. On my contract it excludes VAT and I think on comparison sites it includes VAT. Thanks for all the other advise given!! :T

You can change to a different tariff with Scottish Power without penalty. Just phone them and they will transfer you immediately. I was on the Jan 2015 tariff from about November 2013. I then changed to the July 2015 tariff earlier this year which was a bit cheaper. Recently I changed to the Nov 2015 tariff which is cheaper. You only have to pay exit charges if you move to a different supplier.

You should receive notice from your supplier 6 weeks before the end of your contract. Once you have received this notice, you are free to switch with the same supplier or a new supplier without paying early-termination fees.

It is looks as though you have just received the notice, in which case you are free to switch, as above.

Take a look at their Jan 2016 tariff launched a few days ago.

For the figures typically defined as average consumption, it's in the cheapest 5 deals and within £3 to £5 a year of the best.
