When do people switch to avoid early termination fees - my present deal ends 31/7 /13 - because you can't nominate a date I don't want to start the switch too early and have a new deal start before this date but I don't want to leave it too late and go onto their standard rate - what to people generally do?
I have read it takes 4-6 weeks - so do you leave it to 4 to be safe or do the switch 6 weeks before the end date?
cheers
Current minimum switching time is 3 weeks, but it still does typically take 4-6 weeks. If you apply to switch more than 3 weeks before the end of your current term, you risk facing early exit fees.0 -
Hi ppl
Haven't looked into this too much as was on the Npower GoFix 8 which I think ran out last month.
We are also contemplating moving house so not a real priority although savings are savings.
Anyway I ran my details (ish) through the MSE club but I can't see the Go Fix 8 tariff (only Go Fix or 10/11/12 etc).
Anyway advise?

That is because you are no longer on that tariff and you have been put onto a dearer, possibly uncompetitive tariff. Npower must have written to you to tell you which tariff you are now on. All the more reason to change.0

I just thought of a way to (sort of) make £24 off Scottish Power/Santander. I haven't tried this myself but if you are planning to switch to Scottish Power and have a Santander 123 account it might be worth knowing.
Basically, according to the MSE article on energy company direct debits, Scottish Power will pay you £1 for every £33 in credit they hold in your account (ie your direct debit is overpaying).
This actually works out to about 3% interest if you had the same amount in a bank for a year. Not too shabby! Now, Santander also pays 3% cashback on energy bills so that same say you overpay by £100, Scottish Power gives you £3 and Santander gives you £3 in cashback. Scottish Power pays a max of £12 if you end the year with £400 credit in your account, you get £12 from our energy company and £12 from Santander.
Of course, if it's worth all that hassle is a totally different kettle of fish...0 -
I switched via SimplySwitch in October and it all went through on 22nd November. I expected the £40 to be in my account by now. However, after a bit of digging around it's not done automatically as suggested on this Site - you have to fill in a Claim Form. Now done that so will see what happens0

Oh dear... my npower go fix 11 [elec only] is running out shortly... Scoured the energy switching sites which all reported a nice increase from £88 to £97pm sticking with npower
So much for all the savings these sites advertise
All other utility cos are significantly more expensive...
Could be worse I suppose and keeps up the momentum to reduce consumption with energy saving products. Replaced one of the regularly used 500w garden floods today with a 10w led version. Not a huge amount of difference in light output
Most of the house lights are cfl or leds now so what next... solar immersion heater for the pv???0 -
Hi, I'm a newbie to these switch sites and not very techi.
I just moved into a place which has Npower for both gas and electric and I'm told the spend is £741 electric and £1140 Gas over the past year.
When I moved in Npower said I had to go on standard tarrif unless I signed up for a 2 yr contract or I'd have to pay some ridiculous redemption figure if I changed mid flight after signing up.
I have just paid a bill of £329 for a dual bill from 22nd Feb to 9th April. Npower say they can offer something called Energy on line Aug 2014
I have a 3 bed house with 2 of us in it....Npower are offering a £100 cash back for paying by DD payments and I'm finding all this at my age (wrong side of 65) like taking out a pension because this is just one service, mobiles, landlines, local council and no-end of other things drive me to distraction and the old grey matter is not what it used to be....any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
I find I have to fight for everything these days and even a purchase in NEXT that went wrong because of varying shades of white in a dinner service I had to return had a young salesman telling me that I couldn't get any goodwill gesture paid having taken 3 hours out of my day returning it "because we are in a recession and NEXT have to make as much profit as they can" yeah, right! With a turnover of £3.4 billion and an Operating profit of £601.8million their retained profit of £339.7 million is real hard to get by on isn't it?
I just hate puzzles and tariffs and all that goes with these complexities of buying these days. Like someone said earlier, wouldn't it be good if there was just transparency and something simple like one price we could make direct comparisons with, without all this other codswallop?
HELP!
Thanks0 -

There is something simple to compare prices. Have you read the advice given in the link in the OP?0 -
Hi Everyone,
I'm in the middle of switching my provider but I have deleted the email of the comparison site that I used. (I check all comparison sites before switching!). Should this cause any problems when/if my cashback? Any advice would be gratefully received.0 -

It may do as some sites require you to claim the cashback after the switch is completed, and even if they don't, who will you complain to if the cashback doesn't materialise?
All you can do is hope you chose a site that does not need you to make a claim, and that the money does appear.0
