Right, I'm just working my way through all the advice.

I'm looking for my account details from BT broadband, could take some time.

I was originally on dial up through wanadoo then got the BT Broadband. I didn't ever use BT for anything as I already had 2 e-mail accounts and continued to click on the IE (provided by freeserve) icon.

This is all like Russian to me :(

Just change the outgoing mail server and I think you will be ok.

So to use my @fsmail.net adress throughout I need to have my incoming address as pop.wanadoo.co.uk and my outgoing as mail.btinternet.com?

Check that "hang up after sending and receiving" is not checked in Tools >Options >Connections tab.

Or if it happens before sending/receiving it could be trying to connect on a connection that no longer exists perhaps

Well onzey, I did all that but now it asks me for my password yet doesn't accept it  ...even though it'ts correct

Anyway....someone's now told me how to change it so that when I click on any links on web-sites or the abuse triangle, it automatically uses my Yahoo account instead of bl00dy outlook express :j

I'm a happy chappy now so thank you very very much for all your help. I won't bother you again (until I pluck up courage to ask what a 'paging file' is and why I keep getting pop-ups telling me something about this paging file and my virtual memory :D )

Oh Jay-Jay! We were so close too. Never mind.

Just out of interest what version of Outlook Express do you have?

(Open OE then click Help >About Microsoft Outlook Express)

I'd suggest a new thread for the page file/virtual memory questions, or just Google search first on some relevant words you may find the answers you want fairly easily.

Well onzey, I think I was perhaps a little hasty in downloading Thunderbird earlier today (thought it might solve all my problems) as it's now taken over from OE...... so I can't check what version I have/had. :o

I think that we c0cked up the OE when we got this laptop. We didn't know what we were doing and we fiddled about with all the settings. I think that because I can't remember the original password that I used with all the wrong settings, that it's now 'locked' to those settings whatever I do.

I did try everything you suggested but it asks me to confirm my password at ****** (fsmail.net name) on mail.btinternet.com  ...and I don't seem to know what that is, I've tried every password I've ever used.

    JJ,

Am I right in thinking fsmail.net account was set up when you had freeserve account? And that it's a web based mail service? It could just be the same as the Yahoo address that you can't get to use the POP service (which enables you to download to Outlook Express or Thunderbird or similar).

Have BT given you a free account? That would be the one to use if you want one that downloads I would have thought. Or you could try https://www.softhome.net and set up another web based email ... but softhome allow you to download it. You would enter eg if you set your account up as JayJay@softhome.net...

    Username - JayJay

    Server settings - (POP) .... mail.softhome.net
    User name...JayJay

    Server (outgoing)...(SMTP)....mail.btinternet.com

Softhome is only an example... have a look at FAQ's / Email to find other possible ones. Your outgoing server setting (SMTP) will always be btinternet unless you change provider.
    Torgwen.......... :) ...........
