Totally confused with Outlook Express

As most of you know, I'm totally useless at anything techie :(

I have 2 email accounts, one with yahoo and one with freeserve. I only ever use these two for e-mailing, unless I click on something like the red triangles on here to report a post. When I do this I get the Outlook Express box up and type my message, so far so good.

The e-mails never seem to get sent and I never recieve any in the inbox, it's basically an unused function. So I've just spent the last hour fiddling around with it and searching this forum trying to glean information as to how I can fix it.

I only use it for reporting ro abcon and the occasional website that has a 'contact us' button......neither ever work.

I don't know what a POP3 or SMTP are.... or any of the other things that it's asking me for :o

help me please

Just to be clear, are you saying you can send emails normally from both accounts but not when sending via clicking a link on a website/forum?

If you send an email via Outlook Express when it opens after clicking a link it should be put in your "Sent Items" after you click "Send" if it does go.

I think I may be able to help on the yahoo account, I too got confused but did a few google searches and fiddled about and then i got it to work.

What you need to do is go into Tools,Accounts and Add, make sure it says mail.
Then, under pop3 address put in pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk

Next for servers, put for incoming mail pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk (again) and for outgoing mail SMTP put smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk.

Under incoming mail server put your email address fully ie yourname@yahoo.co.uk then your password.

This should be enough, I know it sounds crazy and it still does to me, also if you get stuck go onto yahoo help section under mail and search for outlook express and it gives you an indepth guide.

I can send from my @fsmailt.net and @yahoo.co.uk accounts but the outlook express was set up my my other half when we got this laptop and the email address doesn't relate to his or my 'normal' email addresses.

After I sent an e-mail it went to the sent box but then I'd get a box on the screen saying that it couldn't be sent and that there was an error, then it would ask for a passoword (pre-filled but not accepted).

I've messed around with it all now and I think I deleted that id....so I think I need to start all over again.

I don't like the blummin thing, wish I could use my yahoo email for everything.

Similarly for freeserve account see here for settings ( I know it uses the word "wanadoo" for certain things now but I have an old freeserve email account and using the word "freeserve" still seems to work ok)

    Edit

My post was meant to appear after Freebyman's

Well it asks me for a password which is pre-filled but not accepted. then I get this

The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was '***********@yahoo.co.uk'. Subject 'test 6', Account: 'mail pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Server: 'smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk.', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '530 authentication required - for help go to http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/pop/pop-11.html', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

    and this

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'mail pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Server: 'smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk.', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

    and this

The host 'mail pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'mail pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Server: 'mail pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11004, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

Have you tried deleting the pre-filled password and entering your correct password which you use to sign in to get your mails normally?

I've tried that but nothing was accepted. I'm trying to get the prompt box up again so that I can try another couple of passwords but it's not coming up.

I'm feeling like throwing it out of the window

I followed the link you put in your post and it says:-

" How do I POP my mail? The ability to access Yahoo! Mail via a POP3 email client (such as Outlook or Outlook Express) is only available to customers of our premium Yahoo! Mail Plus service. If you have not purchased the Yahoo! Mail Plus service, you will be unable to retrieve messages via an email client."

So it looks like you have to pay in order to get mail sent to Outlook Express or similar with the Yahoo account.

Even if it would work, you have put an extra "mail" for the smtp so it wouldn't have worked anyway.

Not only that, but your username is not necessarily your email address, it is often the bit before the "@" in your email address, it's the one you got when you set up your email address.

Have you tried with the Freeserve account?

You could set up another email perhaps.... I use softhome.net, which is a web based mail but I can also get it downloaded to my computer inbox in Thunderbird (which I use instead of Outlook Express, it's the "sister" of Mozilla Firefox). You can set up an account through https://www.softhome.net (or have a look at "emails" under FAQ's on this board to find other possible free email accounts).
    Torgwen.......... :) ...........

As soon as I saw your first post Jay-Jay, I knew this was mine.
My only hope was that none of the more experienced techies would beat me to it.

I believe your troubles can be cured by going the website below.
    http://www.incredimail.com/english/splash/splash.asp
Copy the link or go to https://www.incredimail.com.
I use e-mail readers all the time.
By far the best ever shall forever be Incredimail.
It is free and detects all e-mail settings including hotmail.
All you have to do is remember your password and actual e-mail address.

    I use Thunderbird now though.
Thanks to experience I can set up my accounts almost anywhere.
I won't bore you with my history.

Let me know if I have been of use.

:oIf I fail to thank you individually, I am sorry. Your advice was appreciated but may not have been 100% the result I was after.
