Toys R Us might still have stock, on eeeuser.com it seems a lot of the branches have sold out, but if you are quick PC World just got some stock, do a search for eee on their website and you can use click and collect (it's the 4GB model that is most useful @ £220, the slightly cheaper 2GB model wont take windows XP).

PC World list it as follows:
    501232.jpgspacer.gif
    ASUS

    EEE PC4GB

    Handheld ComputerPrice inc VAT

    £219.99

I haven't watched a ripped DVD, but I do use it with a digital freeview TV USB receiver, and the picture quality is very good.

    I use this one

There have been reports of people giving up their Archos players in favour of a eee pc on various forums. As to the quality, I don't know, but you could ask the experts on this: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=4701 http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=1069

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

if you look on various US sites, they have got Vista running on it, upgraded the RAM, basically torn it apart and rebuilt it.

So basically trying to turn it into a proper laptop then?

I think i'm a fairly typical laptop user - i'm sitting in the living room watching tv, doing a bit of surfing, downloading music, watching the odd movie or movie clip. Maybe some wordprocessing or internet banking too.

I dont think 95% of people need anything as portable as that unit - and certainly dont therefore need to sacrifice on other features such as a decent sized screen, dvd drive, keyboard size, standard o/s etc to get portability.

Not feeling any urges to sell either my Archos 700 or my lappy to downgrade to that

What is a 'proper laptop' exactly? The first laptops were the size of a large suitcase, today laptops are on average the size of an average portfolio. Generally things get smaller and more expensive, though that seems to have changed lately. Perhaps a better way to look at it would be, trying to apply its use to what the individual user requires.

So you're a typical 'home laptop user' as opposed to a 'typical laptop user'. You might as well invest in a desktop and be done with it ;) You obviously don't need portability.

You know what they say, 68% of all statistics are made up (yep even that 68%... I just made it up).

What people seem to forget when comparing the eeepc to regular laptops was that its original target market was for children not adults. It's popular with adults as it plugs the gap between laptop and ultraportable, if you want an ultraportable you were immediately looking at close to £1000 where as the average laptop sells for £500 these days but is still relatively heavy.

Perhaps if you were a 'typical' traveller who had to lug their laptop on an airline and be worried about its treatment while in the hold, or even worked in remote places, where you have to send a report back to the office every so often, or a reporter out doing whatever reporters do. You might think of things differently.

The eeepc offers portability on a scale we've not exactly seen before. Sure there's smartphones or pda's but they are either not exactly what's required, or too fiddly without a keyboard.

Well to each their own, but you shouldn't be so dissmissive of others requirements. Just because you see fit to spend £400 on a portable media player\recorder\tv doesn't necessarily mean everyone else should.

Though you may see it as a downgrade, I'm certain if you visited the eeepc forum, you may find a group of people who don't share that view.

Sounds like a good laptop, although if I purchased it I would have to upgrade the ram. Photoshop is a bit slow on 1gb of RAM. I think 512mb would kill it.lol.
