Surprisingly, it should be up to Quake 3 as well as a plethora of open source stuff there is for Linux.

Seems like you're a voice in the wilderness on this one. It's about zeitgeist - it's an exciting and optimistic product, and it's sticking it to The Man. All the science in the world won't stop people cheering the little guy, and you might want to sit this one out until the euphoria's over! You may be right technically, but people like what this critter stands for. And the one you suggested instead doesn't have a screen....

So let's hear it for the Asus EEE and hope my white one comes next week (Laptops Direct) or I'll have to go down to Asda or Tesco to get one.

I think you'd have to have a very specific need for something like this, and i'm not totally sure what that would be.

You could easily buy a second hand full size laptop for this price - check out the price of a Dell 1300 on ebay - and for £80 more, ie, the price of the o/s you could buy a brand new laptop.

People are spending more than this on the iPhone - if you want something for internet access on the move, it's nearly there. I'd pay an extra hundred for a similar spec to their current top-end with a 9 or 10 inch screen at 1024x768 (for a more powerful 'standard spec' mini-laptop you're looking at much bigger bucks).

Got mine last week, and I'm typing this on it. The Linux O/S is not a barrier - it's really just a launchpad for the apps which include Firefox, Thunderbird, MSN client, and Open Office. Most websites work fine without horizontal scrolling (including this one), the keyboard is fully usable - in fact a very nice feel and you get used to the size very fast, battery life is great, and for anyone who travels with a laptop and as a result has one arm longer than another, it's a complete revelation.

I can do pretty much everything I need in a laptop on this. Every part of it is well thought through, including the provision of a scroll wire on the touchpad, and a webcam which in theory provides video calls over the internet.

Really the only drawback is the size of the screen. But that really is a nitpick, it's a stupendous device for the price, bearing in mind that cheaper laptops generally have some compromises on weight or battery life or options.

In fact I like it so much I've just ordered another for my children.
  • I'm writing this on one too.

I've had it for about ten minutes ...

    It's WOW!!!!

Everything that I need is here

I'm also using mine now, (bought it at Toys R Us, of all places), internet use is perfect. There are very few websites that need scrolling (and those that do I use the new Opera with "fit to screen").

Because I bought it to use on the road I have installed XP so as to use Nokia Data Suite to connect to my phone.

I have found the eee to be far better then I expected, performance and build quality are excellent.

I have installed a 4GB SD card to load my additional programs onto. I am going to up the RAM to 1GB (only because play.com are doing it for £12.99) but am really happy with my little eee so far.

the list is endless! its light protable can fit in a bag and a pocket at a push (its A5 size), its solid state so v tough, wifi means you can surf anywhere in a hotspot, you can install sopcast and so watch football via far eastern sites, microphone and camera for skype, if you have a smartphone and know how to turn it into a modem you can, its a revolution!

if you look on various US sites, they have got Vista running on it, upgraded the RAM, basically torn it apart and rebuilt it.
  • I've had my eee now for a couple of weeks. I also have a very swish dell (work).

I haven't even picked up my dell since (apart from to access secure drives).

It's a wonderful thing. The screen size is fine for me and there is very little scrolling because usually web pages fit.

    Thoroughly recommended.
