Amazing Cheapest Lappy by Asus.

Hi.

Just read a detailed review on Asus Eee PC 701 (PC Pro). Couldn't believe that a PC with an ultra-low weight and an ultra-low price can have so many and such remarkable capabilities.

Here are the specs:

900Mhz Intel Celeron M; 512MB DDR2 RAM; 4GB solid-state flash disk; integrated graphics; 7in 800 x 480 TFT; D-SUB out; integrated high-definition audio; 3 x USB2; 802.11b/g WLAN; SD card reader; 0.3-megapixel webcam; Linux OS; 1yr RTB warranty.

It is £183 (£215 inc VAT), and will be available in another 5 to 6 weeks from now.

It measures just 225mm wide and 170mm deep.
Including its power adapter it weighs only 1.12kg.
The device on its own is a featherweight 928g.

Nominally aimed at children, it is great as a side laptop for rugged use, for adults as well. It is excellent for tapping out emails and working on documents and spreadsheets.

I'd say it is unbelievable.

Won't write more. Please have a look yourself on [SIZE=-1]www.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=7317 -

Ciao.

  • I've read one of those reviews at pcpro.co.uk, too. They have given it 6/6, something that they rarely do.

It is perfect. I needed something portable, economical and versatile and it has all the features. I hope it will be in the market by Christmas. A surprise gift for my daughter, plus I'll be benefiting from it too.

There has already been some stock sold, I think Expansys had someand there were some on sale on Tottenham Court Road last week, but from what I hear all the original stock is gone. It appears that ASDA will be selling it in December as well.

I also want one, but as an addition to my laptop, not to replace my laptop.
As a main machine it is seriously underfeatured, it's only a low resolution 800x480 7" screen, has no CD/DVD drive at all and only has 4GB storage which is not upgradeable, as I recall after OS installation there is only about 1GB free for use.

Apparently Asus are selling one every six seconds so they seem to be popular.
You may not be able to upgrade the internal storage but you can use memory sticks for your documents and presumably an external hard drive. It will also take SD cards for increased storage. There's also an 8Gb version on the way with 1Gb of RAM.

Next year they're rumoured to be launching a version with a 10" screen as well. If they do and the screen is higher resolution it sounds like a great machine to me. Although I'm sure it will be a lot more than £220.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

With plug-in SD card capacities and prices now or the near future (up to 16 GB), or USB hard-drives, or wi-fi network drive, I don't think its minimalism is a problem and it would be great for travel use.

it comes with linux as standard. you wont even get vista on it!
    Get some gorm.
  • I'm also trying to get it as an addition. Most of my work is related to net surfing, emailing and spreadsheets and this new guy is great for that. Yeah Expansys had some, but I was late. Technoworld will be getting some stock next week probably.

No, but XP runs fine on it.

    another plus for it then.
  • Well, my husband managed to get it in USA, for our daughter. He's experimenting with it and is all excited and happy. XP runs great on it. He's planning to get one in addition to his Macbook, as he is travelling back and forth to USA and this Eee PC is very light and portable. SD cards and USB hard drive are features he is extremely pleased about. It's an excellent PDA replacement as well.

    Thanks & Cheers.

My concern would be how well it will be supported in the future, and also how well it connects with things like printers etc. Any ideas?
