Contactless payment not taken

Few week ago I went to a local restaurant that I go to fairly regularly. I paid contactless, declined a receipt but saw the owner put his copy in the till. The next day I checked my statement and noticed nothing was pending. Thought it was odd as usually it appears on there, but knew sometimes contactless payments don't always show so thought nothing of it. Few days later nothing had come out of my account.

I went into the restaurant not wanting them out of pocket, and he luckily managed to find the receipt of my payment, clearly showing my card number, and authorisation code so he said it had gone through. He then said he had run all payments that night the following morning and had completed successfully, so it should have come out. He said if it doesn't then have a meal free on us!

2 week later and it still hasn't. I get why card payments may not come out if they got declined or some communication error during payment, but this was clearly authorised and he had received nothing at his end to suggest there is an issue with the payment. So what could have caused this?

Cause unknown but NOT your problem. It will either be taken or it won't.

Very difficut to say. But don't rely on it never being taken.

What DOES work 100% of the time?

We've all, surely, experienced system failures that have benefited ourselves. We just haven't all been as upright as yourself. Respect.

EDIT: Remember the fly in the film Brazil?...:)
  • Hi,

it'll catch up eventually, just make sure you have money in account to pay, you don't want a default.

    Enjoy your free meal.

    Except it can still debit.
Visa will not do anything if it is under 6 months. After 6 months possible late presentment, so long as the auth date is the date the OP made the transaction and not a later one.
    Life in the slow lane
  • Just a thought - are you sure the contactless went on the correct card and not another which happened to be in your wallet? Or maybe somebody else's card who happened to be very close by? I always take my card out of my wallet before using contactless.

Oddly, I had exactly the same thing a few weeks ago. This was a Mastercard credit card and in mainland Europe. Still no sign, and harder for me to pop back and offer payment. I did check all my other contacless cards in case I had used the wrong one, but no trace.

Cash. (As long as you check for counterfeits and calculate the change correctly!)
