how much change do you actually carry around that would require you to "lug it"? Making it sound like a 50kg weight or something :rotfl:

Possibly exaggerating there, but the answer to your question is "none, if I can help it"... I don't like dealing with coins, they stick out of my wallet funny and then I have to root around in the little pocket to get them out... screw cash, really.

I wasn't really being serious. Just the way your post read made it sound like a tonne :rotfl:
Speaking of which, when we used to go out of a weekend i never paid by card, always cash. I also never really paid attention to whatever the person behind the bar was telling me the price was, so i'd generally just hand over notes and hope the note was enough to cover it and i'd get some coins in return. If i ran out of notes then i'd go get more as i wouldn't really be in a position to be thinking about selecting coins to hand over :rotfl:

One Saturday after a Friday night out i was at work and my wife was sorting out the clothes from the night before ..... £36 in various coins in my pockets :rotfl:

I could understand shops refusing but why would your wife? I once made a £0.02 purchase on card in Argos
    Mortgage (Nov 15): £79,950 | Mortgage (May 19): £71,754 | Mortgage (Sep 22): £0
    Cashback sites: £900 | £30k in 2016: £30,300 (101%)

Its easy to lose track of spending if using cash for small amounts, as over the course of a month they will all add up. Putting it on a card you get a handy statement every month so I can see where my money's going
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?

Very rarely use cash these days. The only times I use it are for my barber (doesn’t take cards), restaurant or bar tips (I want the staffer to get the money not the owner), foreign exchange (but that’s getting less and less), and the canteen at one of my work sites.
I use my AMEX for as much as possible since I get Avios. The canteen at my main work site takes debit cards.
A few of my jobs do pay cash (again fewer than in the past) so I haven’t used an ATM for years (in the UK).

I certainly do not refuse to make transactions of less than a certain amount on my credit cards and have certainly made some very low value transactions. Although I would not hesitate to make a very low value transaction in a supermarket, especially at a self service check out, I admit that I would probably feel uncomfortable at making such a transaction (a few pence) in a small shop

Isn't possible that people who pay solely in cash, are people who receive benefits through a post office card account and don't have a debit card?

There's other reasons , like business owners diverting physical cash to avoid declaring it in their books.
Market traders often pay for big ticket buys like holidays in cash I found when I worked in the travel business.
I think few people solely pay with cash.
I generally don't have any cash on me at all. Even my corner shop takes card for transactions over £1
It's more secure for shop keepers as card payments are banked electronically , no more worries about getting mugged on the way to the bank or nightsafe.

  • Pay 5p for tea at work so have dozens of 5p transactions per month on my statement.
Purchase up to 19 5p teas pm via my Tesco c/card as Tesco do not claim for them and write balances off under £1 ;-)

Why not get 20 teas? You are missing out an extra 5p per month!

BTW, I do a similar thing and even though it is only £1 it pleases me greatly to see "small balance write off" on my statement each month.
  • I use my contactless credit card for absolutely everything that it can be used for. In fact the only thing I need cash for these days is the coffee machine at work (25p a pop). I actually had to pay for something in cash the other day just so that I could get change for a £20 so that I would have cash for the machine!!

    There are several advantages -

    - the credit card statement then acts as my spending diary. I can't 'forget' where the money's gone...
    - I pay the credit card off in full every month, but get a small amount of cashback (only 0.2% now, it used to be 0.5%). Every little helps!
    - I don't have to carry large amounts of cash on me. I have an 'emergency £20', but rarely more than that.
No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...
