Money Questions - If Someone Goes to Prison

Theres also the Prisoner's Wives Association. They help towards the costs of the wife or partners travel costs to visit the person in prison and also help towards meals you eat during the travelling.
Your partner will also be able to claim lone parent benefits. It would probably be best if she can afford to pay something towards the mortgage while you are away.
Best of luck anyway.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040 -
Jamie if you do end up in prison quite a distance from your family then they can apply to the assisted prison visits unit (APVU) for help with travelling costs. Link. This is also where finding out whether theres a local prisoners families group/charity near to you because you may find that they are able to help provide transport. And it may be useful for your girlfriend to speak to people who are/have been in a similar situation to her.
After you're sentenced, if you get more than a year in prison (I don't know what you're looking at realistically, not knowing the details of the offence) and I'm presuming here that you're over 21;), then you'll be supervised by your local probation office on release and they may be able to point your girlfriend in the right direction for help if she contacts them.
Electronic tagging will knock a bit off your sentence too providing you are elegible. I would also think that before you are sentenced you'll have to see a Probation Officer for a pre-sentence report and you'll have an opportunity to quiz him/her about some of your concerns then.
JxxAnd it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end0 -
Good luck-like others I don't know or condone what you did, but I have to give you credit (that's not meant to sound patronising although it probably sounds it) for trying to get things set up for your family in the meantime-they've done no wrong0

Yes, well done jamie for not coming on whining that youre probably going down - good on ya!!
Could you not do as much private work as possible until sentencing ? It may not cover everything but will help.
Remember, whatever you get sentenced to is not what you will do and also prisons are full so you may get a suspended sentence, good luck to you and your family.I understand ALOT more than I care to let on

Jamie,
Well done on asking for advice.
I think that you should speak to your employers and see if they would be prepared to give you a reference to put before the court. Also perhaps a letter of support from your previous regiment.
With regards to your mortagage and what your OH and children will live on, perhaps you and your OH should go along to your Local CAB office to see what support and benefits she will be intitled too should you receive a custodial sentence.
Hope things work out for you and that you keep us updated.:j I have a persecution complex. Everytime I pass a shoe shop they persecute me till I buy them:j0 -
Why don't you and your family take a trip to the CAB and see a Welfare Rights Officer who will be able to advise you?
Although like others I don't condone your crime I also say well done for being prepared to take your punishment and also for sorting things out for your family.
I hoope it all works out for you.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
Good thought: you're standing up and taking responsibility for what you did, you're not blaming it on bad experiences in the forces but it's depressing how many ex-servicemen do end up in a really bad place (prison, homeless etc) so do get whatever support you can!
No it's nothing to do with that at all. I've been in bits of trouble since leaving but have stuck with a job and got a house (nothing special but it's OK) and only got into serious trouble over this. I have been in touch with the regiment but I've not got a perfect record their either.0 -

Thanks for all the stuff I didn't know half of it like the prison visiting stuff. That could be handy. Yeah I'm over 21 - 27 actually! Have done the probation stuff this week so it's just wait and see now. Told that because of the offence may not get tagging but not thinking about that too much so not to get my hopes up.0 -

That's what I'm doing right now and for the next few weeks. Once I went guilty I got kicked out of the job so trying to get by. I took the advice about getting info from the CAB and things don't seem so bad on the money front. Also trying to get the bank to do some interest only deal so maybe will get some news on that.
Just again thanks for the advice. Dealing with all this stuff with everything else going on is tough but I've got some good heads ups here0 -
Could ou o some overtime until you are sentenced? And also, show your wife the OS page so her money goes furtherDoing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......
My DD might make the odd post for me0
