Feeling over whelmed over new house

Gross gross gross.
Ok I think I’ve got someone in to have a go at the roof. He comes recommended from the Nextdoor app. He got his binoculars out and showed me what the problem might be. Issue is that it’s hard to see as there are two chimneys.
Said he could fix on a dry day (raining heaps atm). Said he will take photos/videos.
So goodness knows! He’s not a roofer.0 -
Bought our house in June - I knew it was going to be a project and we would have to live with the previous elderly occupant's appliances etc.for a while. Taking up carpets, a trail from bedside to toilet reveals their possible incontinence!
The kitchen units were filthy and a washing machine leak has rendered several musty and unfit for use.
The 2 "fast" zones on the ceramic hob don't work and the other 2 won't even boil a pan of water. The fan in the oven is defunct, dishes either cook on the top or on the bottom, but not both and it vents alarming amounts of steam in your face (and sets off the smoke alarm) every time you open it.
The tiny hot water tank mean only one person can shower in the morning and another in the evening.
The plaster on the walls is so hard, the electrician broke 4 drill bits and eventually burnt out his heavy duty drill. The ceilings are basically hardboard and have zero fire-resistance - which was especially alarming as the dry, dense joists started smoking when they were drilled.
The bathroom is so small that 2 people cannot be in there and shut the door.
There are 7 doors between, and including, the kitchen and the back door (larder, garage, 2 storerooms and back lobby) and they are hung so they clash at every opportunity.
Stripping wallpaper is revealing (hopefully) past movement and cracks.
But it's all fixable and I don't regret moving. The house is cosy and has a lovely garden. The road is quiet and the neighbours are friendly."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
I havent read this thread but as someone who was and is still in your boots, I encourage you to learn to DIY as much as possible. I brought a new house and it seems every little thing that can go wrong, is wrong. If I was to get someone in to do everything, it would cost a fortune.
It seems like a gargantuan task at first but you'll get there eventually (and it's much more satisfying!)Know what you don't0 -

Glad I’m not the only one who thinks new (to them) houses are dirty!
When I moved out of my last home, you could have eaten the dinner of the floor or even the carpets it was that clean
I viewed this house and it was spotless , seriously there were six kids here and a dog, and you could have eaten your dinner off the floor
Only she didn't clean completely when she moved out ( oh it was clean, just not to my clean ) so I spent the first two days scrubbing the kitchen and bathrooms before I unpacked
I know the Vendor ( very small world here ) and she said she had cleaned but didn't go over board because she knew no matter what she done, Id come in and clean again :rotfl:
End of the day, everyone has different standards. Right now in my life I clean the floors when I feel them getting tacky and I vacuum when I notice grubby marks, My house isn't dirty, just with work and life, its deciding what you can or can not live with
All the same, I couldn't live with someone else filth0 -
A lot of people would think you've done really well. Maybe be a bit grateful rather than snowflake out. However (made up) bad you think your life is, it could get a heck of a lot worse - it always can. Just bear a lot in mind when you complain.0

I don’t know why people continue to take digs but whatever.
Ok update - after the cleaning over the past week, the smell is ok.
I’ve worked out what needs doing. I’ve learnt that washer and dryers can be stacked, hello utility room. One bedroom isn’t smelly and can be lived in.
I have worked out I can make a walk in wardrobe in one bedroom! That’s exciting!
I started to paint the kitchen doors and regretted it as I think they look ok and they don’t feel/look as dirty today.
I’m still a bit concerned about the ceramic hob thing - if that’s safe!
Also the roofer is only charging £100. I’ve followed peoples suggestions.
Thanks everyone (I’ll still be posting) and oh god the horror stories!0 -
Please do keep posting your progress at it will be nice to see your "horror house" becoming your new home.0

Thank you.
Haha I think the house isn’t too bad, it’s just the transition from renter to home owner. Complete shock!0 -

Are you saying it’s better to have like wardrobes? I just want the extra room to make use of the space and to de clutter0
