If you can't get the carpets into a liveable condition, just pull them up and take them to the tip, a bit of paint and a few rugs will clear the house of any smell and make it perfectly liveable until you are ready to carpet.
Ah! Rugs. 5 for £5 from that auction! eg

No new (I won't say "fresh") smells there, then.

It's surely worth a quick trip to the Swedish Embassy.

I would recommend this even without the rugs. Go round the bit at the end and pick up a trolley full of all those little practical things which do so much to make a home feel tidy and comfortable, like coat and kitchen hooks, toilet roll holders, waste bin for the bathroom, drainer for the the sink, etc etc etc.

It sounds a bit ridiculous, but honestly I find those small things make almost as much of a difference as the big expensive things when making a place feel like home.

  • G_M - I had the same book lolol. Cost a lot of money for me in those days.., but thank god for Youtube now, its much more helpful.
  • Can anyone point me in the direction of where I would go to ask this question. My gas (top) cooker was working fine, than I got nervous about the smashed ceramic hot plate (another story), turned of the cooker on the wall, lit the gas by a lighter...: now I get the constant clicking sound. I’ve switched it on/off, cleaned the sparky thing.... let it dry.

The clicky sound is the same sound as you get when you turn on a gas ring yes? But continuous?
When you turn on the gas ring, do you have to a) turn the knob (to turn on the gas AND b) push the knob to get the spark (via the clicky sound)?
Most likely the knob has stuck in the 'pushed' position so it is trying to spark the gas even though the gas itself is off.

Do you know what the switch on the wall does? Is the oven electric (switch is the power for the oven)?
Or is the switch for the gas cooker (seems strange)?

    edit: I googled utube:

    a bit american, but

  • Ah it’s all working now thanks.
  • With regards to the kitchen cooker, it’s gas for the rings, electric for the oven.... and a ceramic hot plate. The ceramic hot plate is heated by electrify and it’s smashed. I know that ceramic hot plates can’t be used if they are smashed, but I’m just concerned that this one could pose an electric shock to me? It has a normal dial to switch on/off. Is there a way to get it permanently disconnected?
