Just downloaded every invoice from Oct 2017....only £64 in credit, but looks like the hunt for a new supplier is on... question is, do I cancel the DD anyway

I would, If you are definitely in credit (check your meter and do your own sums. Even if you end up in debit by a few quid it's easier to pay them than it is to try and get your money back.

Make sure that you save your DD money though, ready for when the bill does eventually arrive.

It's probably not a good idea to try and initiate a swap until you've been transferred to the SOLR as you might end up going down a black hole.

I've already had two failures (GB and IRESA) and they've been sorted out quite well and I've got my money back. However it's taken 2-3 months so be prepared to wait. I'm guessing that it depends who the SOLR is and how well they (and you) are prepared.

Once I’ve stopped the DD, what’s to stop me just signing up with another supplier?

Once a SOLR is appointed then your supply will be already in switch so another switch will be rejected by the national database. I doubt you could get a switch rolling now before that happens.

The appointment of an SOLR is usually done very quickly. I'd be surprised if it is later than next Tuesday. Wait for the transfer to go through before you start a switch, there is no reason to jump the gun.

I’ve managed to switch to Avro this afternoon.

They came out as the next cheapest supplier after Eversmart. Last month I had a call from Eversmart asking for meter readings: once I gave them - they said they owed me nearly £500. Eventually I got that back and now after doing the calculations I reckon they owe me about £100 but I won’t change to Avro until the end of the month and I’ve already stopped the DD to Eversmart. I’m going to take my chances and see if this switch works OK.

You won't be switched to Avro in 3 weeks time-there is a 14 day cooling-off period before anything at all can happen, and by then you will be a customer of the SOLR. So the odds are that your switch will fail and you will have to start again.
But do let us know if it turns out otherwise.

It usually takes a minimum of 17 days from application for a switch to be actioned. It certainly doesn't happen in a day.

You don't need to cancel a Direct Debit to switch.

Your switch may be stopped - but be aware that Avro take the first DD about 12 days after the initial switch application ,so you may have to be on the ball to stop Avro taking your cash.
  • Energysmart owe us over £1000. Will we ever get it back?

We joined them just before Christmas, and paid the £1200 being a years anticipated payment in advance.

Unfortunately, due to an unexpected change in circumstances soon after joining, we haven't used anywhere near as much energy what we originally anticipated. but weren't too bothered as we were being paid 12% interest on the credit balance.

What happens to our advance payment now? And will we still get the 12% interest?

We also have a direct debit set up, with first payment due just before this Christmas, being a year after we joined. I think I might cancel that, as hopefully this mess will be all sorted out well before then.

Might be best to leave the DD in place as they will use that to refund you. It can cause a delay otherwise.
