Drifting off topic but only a bit, would you buy a hybrid? Pure EV isn't an option for me because I need to be able to tow a caravan and that pretty much rules out plug in EVs, but there are a few hybrid options like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and one of the Golfs. I've been put off by the complexity - should I be?

Personal opinion, but you might have to consider future values.

The hybrids, both HEV's and PHEV's did a fantastic job in testing and proving the technology, but as well as being 'the best of both worlds' they are also the worst, and as such TCO comparisons (in the US admittedly, but 'gas' is cheap there) have shown that whilst BEV's are cheaper than ICEV's, PHEV's are more expensive.

Add that to the fact that PHEV sales are falling (BEV's are rising), and there might be an overall cost, not saving, if residual values fall too fast.

Obviously I'm guessing, but the tide is turning now (the last year or so) so your decision got harder.

If your decision is environmental, then could you consider, like myself, some sort of compromise, with a low(ish) value BEV for lots of shorter journeys, to off-set the PLANETARY DESTRUCTION of the caravan capable bigger ICE?

I understand there are a couple of BEVs that are type approved for towing (N.B. there's no real reason why any BEV couldn't tow - except that very few manufacturers have bothered with type approval).

AFAIK, the Jaguar iPace or any of the Tesla models could be used to tow. Of course all of those have very high purchase prices !

I have wrestled with my conscience a bit. As a matter of principle I've decided that having a caravan or flying is an either/or for holidays, with the caravan winning hands down on emissions because I plan the use efficeintly. And I tow it with a Vauxhall Astra with low emissions (by ICE standards) - £20 car tax bracket. I've also minimised my "running about" mileage preferring to use my pedelec. I certainly don't need a big car - just one that allows me to tow a small caravan, but realistically these are few and far between and limited to the more expensive ones that Eric has identified. One day......
  • Tesla model 3 has towbar as an option.

I quite fancy the idea of towing my track car with the ev.... seeing the bewildered onloookers would be quite satisfying

  • My model S P100D was averaging about 2.2 before I rejected it,

That meant that it didn’t have the range for longer trips and was far too big to use around town.

Well, it does seem that you have all the disadvantages of an ICE to go with the additional range. Most of my run around stuff could be done on a PHEV battery, but if I'm going to make the leap and spend a lot more than I normally do on a car anyway it seems a bit half-hearted.

So I'm waiting a couple of years for my current car to get even older!
Obviously your tow bar issue makes it more difficult. I wonder when the first mid-market EV will come along to address that niche - I suspect they'd have the market to themselves for a bit. I suspect it's the homologation cost not the absence of torque and power (or weight, for that matter).

In that case, neither. It behaves like a Hyundai Kona.

All hail the mighty torque, BEV's are going to win hands down.

Ford (US) recently advertised their prototype BEV pick-up* towing 1,250,000lbs of train, wagons and pick ups. :T
