Jesus Sarah I thought my school was bad but yours sounds even worse
What a scary thing to happen to your dear boy...I am so upset to hear this and BLOODY ANGRY TOO

When the rate of Autistic Spectrum Disorders is growing daily at a phenomenal rate why oh why are they not giving the staff the tools and knowledge they need to help our kids???

They need specialist help in many areas and if the powers that be continue to insist they are best suited *harumph....* in mainstream why not give them some flippin' training then??????

    *shakes head in disbelief*

    Big squeezy hugs Dee XX

Its a total joke i think the disorders that are in our society today even the basic handling skills to be tought to teachers with every school being allowed at least one specialised teacher to deal with these disorders. God knows us parents love our kids and dont get training either, its all just the help from the great people on here and love and supporting our kids. God if we dont fight for them who the hell will!!! xxx

i am suprised to hear that the police handcuffed your son pw, wen my son had a particularly bad outburst at the age of 9 the police were called, but because he was under the age of criminal responsibility, they said their hands were tied and they couldn't touch him, so they radio'ed thru and got an ambulance and two paramedics, to assist, one of the police officers came with us in the ambulance, and my son was sectioned for his own safety.
he was on a kids ward because of his age, and because he was so violent, had a security guard, to prevent him attacking the nurses.
the security guard, showed me how to use the technique on daniel so i can restrain him, without causing unneccary harm
my social worker is aware of difficultieas regarding my sons, and says restraining them for their own protection or for the protection of others is perfectly understandable, and she would have no problem eplaining this to any one who decided to report me.
incidentally the staff at daniels school are also trained in restraining kids safely, but as a special resedential school, not sure how they would cope otherwise

    The situation the day my son was handcuffed was as follows;

He found it hard coping with academic work and stressed out big time, basically ripped his work up and that of his peers and threw chairs about etc. The teacher removed other kids from the classroom and teachers were called in to help deal with my son. My son ended up baracading himself in the classroom and lined paint pots up and said he would throw them at anyone who came near him. Whilst this was happening i was phoned to get me into school to deal with him and whilst on route the police were called to the school. AS i got there the classroom was trashed but my son was sitting at a lap top playing on that with a special needs manager, although scared was quiet and not kicking off at that point, i sat with him and spoke to him for a few mins then the poilice came in 2 of them. One sat with my son speaking to him i was taken into the next door classroom to discuss things and give them background on george and whats been going of of late. Next thing i hear is my son crying his eyes out and then being dragged from the classroom in handcuffs by the police officer. i ran out into the hallway where they were and cuddled my son as was really really distressed. I told the police to remove the cuffs and asked for an explination as to why he was in cuffs and why as i was in the next room wasnt i called upon if they saw things escelating. The reason i was given for handcuffing him was.. because he was asked to walk out of the classroom he agreed then froze in fear and refused to budge. that poor boy sobbed his heart out with me in the hallway. The head was there and asked the police to escort us off the premesis. before she said that she told me verbally he was excluded! i have obviously put complaint in with the school and with the police which is ongoing. but no further forward with that either at the moment! Police have said in the complaint process that they are justified to handcuff a minor and stand by that althought couldnt prosecute him for the damage to the school classrooom.

You are right Sarah, if they are the ones taking day to day responsibility of our kids and if we are not able to be there to assist then they MUST have some training to learn how to cope with them instead of just calling the police. Not being funny but the Special Needs schools cope so why should mainstream school be any different.

Does anyone know how to set up petitions on the Downing Street website? We should start one that petitions for ALL teachers on Teacher Training courses to have Special Needs recognition and training as part of their training before the go and teach (the old ones are more than set in their ways no doubt) but this would ensure future generations of children get the bost possible assistance and help while at school. I know this does not help for today but what do you think?
  • Does any body get fed up of fighting for every little bit of help you need, and it's to much bother for the school to help if there class was full of 30 kids who don't need any help they would feel so much happier, but because they have one who needs extra help it's to much like hard work.Sometimes when you talk to them all you want to say is you deal with this for 48hours solid and you might actually understand what i mean.
Have given up on the head for a statement am going to go above his head when i've suggested dual schooling my dd2 he said there is a boy in the school who is worse and our priorities are sorting him out 1st. I spoke to another parent the other day whose son used to go to the same school and she said he'll hold out as long as possible not statementing as the money for support comes out his budget and that's all he's bothered about.Sorry if post seems all muddled dd2 up till 12 and them raiding kitchen cupboards at 4.30 sorrry not 4.30 as i said dd2 delightfully corrected me when i told her off this morning it was 4.23
  • i think thats a brilliant idea, not sure how to do it tho BM, special needs are such a huge part of society now and as i said before if we dont fight for our kids who the hell will. Any action necessary you all have my full support.

This isnt just for our kids its for every child that needs help now and in the future years in education. ;)

  • PW.....no it is not always the school who request a statement....parents can do it themselves....it is the LEA who grant and organise a statement and it doesnt stay with a specific school/nursery it moves with your child....however problems can arise if your child moves district as then they are under a different LEA who may have different policies and rules.

In this case its the school who are requesting it. I was just worried that as it was the school doing it, it would only last while he was in that school and we'd have to go through the whole thing again when he changed to secondary school.
