Hi my 2 year old has recently been diagnosed with asd with regarding clothes I've only noticed that he will insist on wearing shoes at all times unless at bed times if not he will throw violent tantrums

I was completely gutted when we got the diagnosis ill be honest I did think he was a bit lazy becuase of his speech not developing but since the diagnosis I've started to notice what other people have been seeing what I wasn't for example he won't look at you directly and lining toys up and having to have everything in a routine also he would get distressed if his hands are dirty

Another thing was we took him to the seaside at the weekend when I went to take off his shoes to walk on the beach he refused to put his feet on the sand and got distressed

What I could really do with is tips on potty training we've been trying now for an absaloute ages with no joy with extremely violent tantrums were now considering giving it a break till his speech improves wich hasn't advanced now for months sadly were still waiting on referrals from portage speech therapy and haven't heard back off the paediatrician since the diagnosis and don't really know where go from here

    Thanks

try the national autistic society for help and support as well.

potty training i wouldnt even worry about my son was still in nappies at 4 and at nearly 11 has only been dry at night for a year. your son is only 2 and you will have a huge learning curve to go through in the future.

You should get more help when your son goes to school as well.

    good luck

Brutus - my son won't do anything without his socks on! He has to have a fresh pair in the evening and he wears them in bed.

For going in the sea (paddling pools etc) you can get plasticky shoes like these: http://www.sportsdirect.com/hot-tuna-tuna-infants-splasher-shoes-226002

As for potty training, I waited til my son was well over 3 and he managed the whole lot within a week! Whereas my other son (not asd) was not dry at night until almost 5.

A cautionary tale: when DS1 was quite young (under 5), we went to the sea, and admittedly it was a pebbly beach rather than a sandy one, but he became completely distraught and absolutely refused to put a foot down, so I had to carry him. I was telling a friend this later, and she said "I think I'd have relented, and bought him some jelly shoes." "BUT HE WAS WEARING HIS JELLY SHOES! AND HE STILL WOULDN'T WALK!"

We have ave an school educational psychologist (think thats right) coming into school next week to have a look at my son. He is nearly 10 I have said since he was small i think he might be on the autism spectrum somewhere. He is really hard work and getting more angry and aggressive at home when he gets frustrated. If i have to listen to one more conversation on the ipod touch 5th generation i will go mad. He has mentioned it countless times a day for months arghhhhh! Not getting him one either its to expensive. The new senco is fab at his school she is really pushing for the 2nd opinion.

Local pcahms psychologist only seems to diagnose adhd not anything else .... Not the only unhappy parent. The take this drug (told its the only one suitable) or we cannot help you attitude does not work for me. I hope the rumours of his retirement this year are correct. The drug was a nightmare once it wore off he was off the scale wild at home. To much of a pressure cooker effect methinks.

Good luck Maysie the educational psychologist. We talk about motorways here and how many minutes hours and sleeps until holidays birthdays etc. Also the solar system and whether there is school on Saturn and Pluto. :)

  • Hi all new to this forum but I have twin boys that are asd. They were diagnosed when they were young and one was mild and the other moderate. I am very lucky though that they don't show any of the signs of autism.

Unfortunately I don't have them full time but we do get my boys (eldest isn't asd) 3 weekends out of 4. I do worry about them in later life but the support of my wife and reading the posts here give me hope.

For those that are having trouble with schools I understand how bad things can be and how some dont understand what you go through. Just hang in there and remember all the good times you have with your children and fight for what you all deserve.

Hope this makes sense I'm not too good at this.

    Thanks
