  • I am aware of a child just gone five (with a disability) who gets pull ups on prescription. I'd second the idea of it being worth a conversation with a health visitor.

My ASD son got prescription nappies from age 3 until he potty trained at age 4.5. Ask your health visitor.

Oh, we asked the doctor about melatonin for DS, and she said it's not licensed...but then she said it did come up on her computer. So basically she wasn't sure if she was allowed to prescribe it or not.

She is going to write to CAMHS and ask if they have any experience of children with aspergers taking melatonin, and will contact me when she has more info.

My son has been taking melatonin since he was 4 (3 years now) and it's been a life-saver for us. Now that we all sleep we can manage the behaviour, when none of us slept we were a danger to each other.
We had a paediatrician prescribe it and our GP was dithering about it so we just phone the paed when we need a repeat and go and collect it.
I'd really recommend giving it a try. For us we went from being up 40+ times a night to only once or twice and now it's rare. Wonderful stuff!
Our consultant is near retirement and said he's never seen a child have a problem with it so is happy for ds to take it as long as we feel he needs it. Our pharmacist said they are prescribing more and more for ASD.

Hi sorry to jump in here, i just wanted to ask if there are any specific forums etc for looking for statement advice...and also how i decide what help i think my daughter needs.
I know she needs some amount of 1:1 help in the classroom,
What help could be given to help her social skills?

she is already helped by an outreach team who help her for one morning per week with various activities, exercises.

    thanks:o

If what help she is getting is not enough you have a right to ask the school for more help, and for a statutory assessment.
i am off out now but I have a draft letter i can post on here later;)
You CAN approach the local authority directly for assessment by an Ed Psych.

sorry, should have explained better, the LA have already decided to assess her and i was looking for help on what to put on the form (the 2nd one beginning with her early years and going on to part describing how i think she could be assisted in school) as i'm worried what will happen to her learning if a statement is refused.

ed psych seeing her next week.

and also was wondering what types of help can be provided.

Have they got a specialist ASD team? Our LA has.
i would ask for help in the form of maybe social stories in groups, help with organisation, things to improve coordination and balance. these are things my DS needs, also things like teachers telling him in advance what they are going to do, him being allowed to fiddle about with something, people needing to know my son is just being him not being rude when he asks so many questions.
think of your childs' individual needs make a list and work from that, we are all individuals and kids with ASD even more so!

    I am annoyed!
After asking the school about 2 weeks ago for an appt with the senco they have 'fitted me in' on 8.30 the day before the lats day of term
Doesn't give me much confidence that they will have anything in place for him in the new academic year :(

Sarah, that's what our school always tries to do too - it's so annoying. Could you ask to speak to the headteacher and express your concerns to them? I did this recently, and it seems to have motivated them a bit!

i don't think they will somehow.i was a governor but resigned in March cos they said my daughter was 'heading for exclusion at secondary school' so i withdrew her and am home educating her(after repeated failures to get the help for her that she needed - EBD due to stuff in the past and living with DS)
i suppose someone will suggest i change schools but i do not drive and getting ds out of the house is very difficult sometimes. He needs stability.
The differing needs and interests of DS and DD are such that i could not home ed them both, besides he needs to learn the social stuff which just comes naturally to DD.
