Oh, we asked the doctor about melatonin for DS, and she said it's not licensed...but then she said it did come up on her computer. So basically she wasn't sure if she was allowed to prescribe it or not.

She is going to write to CAMHS and ask if they have any experience of children with aspergers taking melatonin, and will contact me when she has more info.

I know of several autistic teenagers who have taken melatonin with mixed results of it working. However, there seem to be no side effects that anyone else has been aware of, so it may be worth trying.

My friends son takes that and has AS... she said she had to get it prescribed by the doctor at the clinic he attends which is in a hospital, GPs are not allowed to prescribe it.

Js-O-H, yes, that's what Ryan's Stars team worker told me too - it sounds as though it is something that would help Ryan, so I'm really hopeful we will be able to give it a try at least.

jodie - thanks for that info - is it a sleep clinic that he goes to, do you know?

No it's just the child development clinic that he goes to to see the specialist every now and then, my son goes to it to but we dont have a need for the drugs (at the moment anyway lol).

Do you see anyone? Maybe you could ask to be referred to someone.

No, we aren't seeing anyone at all at the moment - hopefully the doctor will refer us to a clinic that can prescribe it though.

My dream is that one day my son will fall asleep before my husband.....sigh..... :D

Hello all, haven't posted for ages as had nothing much to report. Will catch up on thread later.

My husband and I have been in the UK for six weeks - normally live in Spain..

We went to IKEA Wednesbury today with our son and his girlfriend (both on the spectrum, girlfriend formally diagnosed).

I had to twice quietly tell my son about inappropriate behaviour (once when he was dragging his girlfriend round the store by her hair :eek:with her screaming with laughter, once when he was arm-wrestling her in the restaurant).

The girlfriend kept disappearing to look at 'bright and shiny' things and we kept losing her.

Oh the joys of being the parents of Aspies!

They are 21 and 28 and it is quite difficult when they are that age to tell them in the right way about innapropriate behaviour. Luckily my son took it as it was meant and he himself took on the task of finding his girlfriend - he just headed in the direction of the bright and shiny things!"

Will catch up on the thread now!

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

samf, I would talk to your HV about larger nappies / pull ups etc, I am sure these things ARE available, and your HV should know who to ask. Possibly not at 2.5, but if the child still needs them when most children wouldn't, I have a feeling that they are prescribable, .

I am aware of a child just gone five (with a disability) who gets pull ups on prescription. I'd second the idea of it being worth a conversation with a health visitor.

And for those parents who have trouble with clothing going over the children/young people's heads, consider unpicking a shoulder seam and sewing in snap fasteners?
