How about people just ask? Just say "I need XYZ doing, but I don't get paid until XXX." This way there's no surprises and they will negotiate a suitable start of job date with you, if they are happy to wait to get paid they will make it before your pay day, if they aren't happy to wait they will start after. It's a bank holiday weekend by the way, I can't blame them for wanting it on the same day.

Even worse is the same tradesman did work for the OP last week and wanted paying the same day so the OP knew what the tradesman was like when it came to payment already.

True. I hope he wasn't an amazing tradesman as he'll probably never work for the OP again.

He's probably a small sole trader thats fed up chasing people for overdue invoices.

Even if people do pay on time, it means wasted time in the office issuing invoices - being paid while still with the customer saves time and means there are more hours in the week to earn money.

In this situation, I'd have driven to a cash point with him following and at least withdrawn as much as I could to pay him. He obviously needs the money.
  • I’d always expect to pay a tradesman on completion unless specifically agreed otherwise.

So you wouldn't have made sure you had the money before engaging his services? Nice one.

In the situation we’re talking about he didn’t have the money.

I've never not paid on the day of job completion with the exception of a plumbing emergency over a weekend where the plumber who is also a friend did a quick repair but was going away that day so said to pay him when he returned.

Same here - and we also had a plumbing emergency where the guy (who we knew well) came out on a Friday night to fix a leak when we had no cash in the house. We offered a bank transfer, but he said to give him cash next time we saw him. When we dropped it round to his house the next day he told DH that it could have waited till next time he was working at ours - we had additional work lined up for him.

Eight months ago DH started a handyman business. This has since grown more on the garden landscaping side with jobs lasting a few weeks, but when he first began he was doing odd hours/days and always explained to his customers that he expected paying on completion of the job. One particular customer wanted him to do quite a lot of work but all odd bits (some decorating, gardening, construction etc) and started by paying him at the end of a week when he might have done two or three days work there. That was fine, obviously, but then things began to slide and some weeks he'd do a few days but they put off paying him citing all sorts of excuses. They kept putting work his way but drip fed the payments so they were always in arrears. Eventually a month went by and they still owed him a few hundred £££. We had a nasty feeling he wasn't going to be paid, yet DH - who hates chasing people - urged to send them a gentle reminder by yours truly, suddenly had a reply to a text saying they had the cash if he wanted to pick it up......

They've indicated they have more work for him, but he's reluctant to go back now :o
