Tradesman wants paying on the same day

A tradesman did some work for me this week and as soon as he finished he asked me to send him his payment. Less than hour later he spoke to me again about being paid today. I was going to pay him over the weekend (today is Friday) but he said he wanted paying today as the job was finished and was quite indignant that I had considered not paying him today with a 'tut tut, I am shocked, the job is finished, so pay me' attitude.
He did a few hours last week which was a part of the same job and I paid him for that within two hours of him finishing as he asked, but when I work I have to wait for a week until I am paid. Is there a statutory minimum time between a worker completing a job and being paid? Asking twice within an hour for his payment I thought was very impatient. Even if he was desperate for money, that is not my fault, and I can't belive he can't wait until tomorrow or Sunday when I get paid so I can pay him It's not that I am keeping him waiting a whole week. I owe him £400.

Try going in to a shop taking stuff and telling them youll pay them when you get paid.
If you didnt agree a payment period, youd have to assume that payment on completion where the terms. Pay him, youre paying it anyway.0 -
Sounds ridiculous.
Any odd payment terms, and as far as I am concerned that is less than 14 days, shoulf have been discussed up front.
Have you employed a treadesmen on the cheap?0 -

Nice comment. Nothing like it.
And my 14 days was generous.
If tradesmen want more it is a bad sign and they need to say up front.0 -

Personally, I think the comment from spadoosh was spot on.
If I arranged for a tradesman to do a job for me, I would assume that payment would be due on satisfactory completion of the work unless something to the contrary had been arranged beforehand.0 -
In practice, "any time faster than it could come before a small claims court". Not much he can do if you pay a week "late".0

Payment on day seems more than reasonable unless something different were discussed.
Have had various trades come do work and here and there and have always paid on completion... doesn’t really require a second thought.0 -
So you expect him to use his own time (when he could be working for someone else) and his own petrol so that he can return to you just so that you can pay him? He'll then have to drive home. Not very fair, is it. Don't book a tradesperson to do work for you if you can't pay them on the same day as completion. If you're paid on the 31st, book them a couple of days later so you know that you have the cash.0

Ask the tradesman for his bank details and do a transfer to him...0

I don't understand why you thought you would not pay him on completion, why should he have to wait for you to get money as you are broke, it's not his fault you don't have the money but he is the one not paid. I think you will find it difficult to get further tradesmen to work for you once they know you don't pay on time.0
