Thanks everyone for sharing your great responses! From what I see there is a wide range of opinions on whether digital receipts carry value or not :)

At the moment I have an idea (and knowledge required ) to build a system where you can connect your debit/credit card and start getting digital receipts automatically for purchases in-store.

The way it would work is that you would go to 'our' website, register an account and link your card. Then you can choose whether you want them to be delivered via email or messages from a bot (e.g Facebook Messenger), in a short version of this flow you can do all of this via facebook messenger skipping the website all-together and still not have to download any apps.

However as always with retail solutions it won't happen unless retailers see an incentive to support it (since they're literally sharing their sales data), so loyalty/rewards would be included as part of the proposition for smaller merchants and email sharing/marketing for larger brands. (or email for simple profiling while prohibiting marketing emails)

If there is a product that fits both merchants and customers we can get rid of paper receipts all together as it's the future anyway.

Sounds evil but no :) The way it would work is by registering your card with card-processor to get real-time notifications when you make a purchase and push you a receipt. Card details don't need to be stored other than last 4 digits so you can differentiate/unlink them in the dashboard.

So what are the advantages of using a phone instead of a card? Particularly if one is not in the habit of carrying a phone everywhere.
