Paper receipts - something we need?

I'm a little reluctant to use Google Pay simply because my phone (which has NFC) doesn't have a fingerprint reader, so I'd need to use a PIN instead.
However, my reluctance is probably somewhat illogical, as I was perfectly happy to use a PIN with my card in pre-contactless days!
Apple require your finger on the reader to make a contactless payment. Mostly Android (Google Pay) requires the screen to be unlocked - and I believe you can't use Google Pay unless you have an unlock mechanism (password, PIN or fingerprint - swipe code is usually not allowed).
In either case it is still safer than a contactless bank card in your pocket which could be prone to drive-by charging - someone putting a reader close to your back pocket for example. It would be difficult for a phone screen to unlock while the phone was in your back pocket.0 -
Does the phone actually need to be unlocked though? It says here:In either case it is still safer than a contactless bank card in your pocket which could be prone to drive-by charging - someone putting a reader close to your back pocket for example. It would be difficult for a phone screen to unlock while the phone was in your back pocket.

No unlock needed for smaller payments
To make most purchases in stores, you need to unlock your phone. You won't need to unlock it for certain small payments.
Note: You can only make a limited amount of locked transactions before your phone will ask you to unlock it.
which, unless I've misunderstood (highly likely!), implies that it doesn't.Stompa0 -
I have always had to unlock with a fingerprint to use Google pay"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

I have always had to have my screen unlocked (by whatever method - PIN or fingerprint) to use Google Pay, even for small amounts (<£5).0

Hmmm, after delving into this a bit further, the suggestion seems to be that all that is required is for the screen to be awake, the phone doesn't actually need to be unlocked. I'd be interested to know if anybody could confirm that this is the case (or not).I have always had to have my screen unlocked (by whatever method - PIN or fingerprint) to use Google Pay, even for small amounts (<£5).Stompa0 -
How do you wake the screen without your fingerprint or PIN?"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

I don't use my card or phone for any day to day payments. I have a ring that does it all and it's far more convenient.
Great on the underground or any other public transport, just put my hand on the contact point.
Works on all contactless machines and no one has my bank details.
I always decline receipts for any contactless payment unless it's for an item I may want to return.
I have an old phone I take on nights out, used for phone, messaging and ordering an Uber, so if it gets stolen or lost, it's no great drama.
Consequently no NFC.
The only gripe I have is that the contactless transaction payment limit needs to be raised to £50 (at least).....£30 is fast becoming insignificant on a night out.;):)Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

By 'awake' I just mean that the screen is on, so by hitting the power button.dipsomaniac wrote: »How do you wake the screen without your fingerprint or PIN?Stompa0 -
It seems it is possible to Google Pay with the screen locked.

Never tried it with my phone though ... might try at lunch today if I remember.0 -
Google pay wont let you attach a card without security so it doesnt make sense that you can then use the phone without security"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0
