Paper receipts - something we need?

I now use Onedrive app on my phone to take pictures of the receipts and then bin them, sorry and all that, I am not giving shops my email address - a, I will get bombarded with adverts from them and b, it takes forever reading it out - what if the cashier types it wrong, your 'proof of purchase' if you paid by cash has gone forever.
the picture of the receipt is no good for the store in the event of a warranty or guarantee claim. But I agree with the email to retailer issue. The often get you to sign up to their newsletter in the process. Typos are common, even typing it yourself. I have a common mistake in typing my email where I miss out a vowel. (it's always the same vowel in the same spot).0 -

I always scan and bin the receipts. Are you saying that shops won't take digital receipts as proof of purchase?"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0 -
Many "paper" receipts from tills are now printed on thermal paper roll by thermal printers - and these fade to zilch over time.
So if you buy something expensive in person rather than online and get one such type of receipt - you scan or copy it pronto.0 -
In all the years I've been using contactless, none of that has ever happened.seatbeltnoob wrote: »you need receipts with contactless, much more so. On the screen most of the time the pdq doesn't even have the amount payable on screen. Customers dont even know how much they're paying, they're taking buy what the cashier is telling them. I always get a receipt to confirm that contactless has taken the correct amount.
This is paticularly bad when the cashier enters the amount manually into the card machine system and the total isn't digitally totted up.
I dont think paper receipts is that really that bad ecologically, they are tiny, thin pieces of paper. The carbon footprint is likely to be super low. I have receipts that I collect in a box, and go through them each month and discard the ones not needed and keep everything related to business expense, warranty/guarantee purposes etc.
The pile, once flattended and compacted isn't that much to be honest. Compare that to 4 wheely bins worth of rubbish that's taken away each month. It pales in comparison.
I feel like some people just want to feel like they're doing the right thing and doing their bit. But cutting back on odd bits of paper is a drop in the ocean.
I guess people do whatever makes them feel comfortable, it's like wearing an old jacket.....
Anyway, a lot of the bigger stores are now offering e-receipts that are emailed directly to you.
Sort of makes the argument mute, even though the paranoid will always resist.....;)Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

so far I haven't spotted any incorrect amounts being charged. But you're happy to blindly just tap without seeing a confirmation of the amount on the pdq?0 -
Never tapped without seeing the amount on the card machine, except on the bus or tube...seatbeltnoob wrote: »so far I haven't spotted any incorrect amounts being charged. But you're happy to blindly just tap without seeing a confirmation of the amount on the pdq?Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

Oh really.. maybe you haven't been paying attention because on ingenico machines they dont have the amount on there, they just have the contactless sign. Many small shops do not have a sophisticated payment terminal that displays the amount.
I don't think you've stopped and thought about it and just assuming you can see the price being charged. I can assure you there are MANY setups where it's been badly set up. They just rushed through and added contactless PDQs where it was supposed to have a separate display for price - but they haven't got that component.
I know because I ask for a receipt when I haven't been able to see a digital display of the total.0 -
Thats why it is so much easier to reconcile contactless purchases using your phone as you receive a total receipt almost instantly"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

If I hadn't been able to see the amount I would have asked for a receipt......However, I've not had that happen and No, I haven't missed it.. You make too many assumptions.seatbeltnoob wrote: »Oh really.. maybe you haven't been paying attention because on ingenico machines they dont have the amount on there, they just have the contactless sign. I check my banking each evening and it's all correct, thankyou
It doesn't matter that you have, or, that someone tried to rip you off.
By the way, calling them PDQs instead of card terminals doesn't make it sound any more authoritative.:)Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

You don't need a receipt, only proof of purchase which might be a credit card statement. If you took a pile of banknotes from under the mattress then you might be out of luck...0
