But this is not practically a receipt, isn't it? It doesn't tell you what you bought and doesn't contain your VAT number. You can't use it to return stuff or do business expenses.

In regards of business transactions, and returns of unwanted goods (assuming the seller allows this) - you're correct.

In regards of consumer transactions and returns of faulty goods - you don't need a receipt; you merely need proof that the transaction occurred.

You will still need a paper receipt at present but I did say that in the not too distant future digital receipts will be more detailed

  • Wouldn't it be nice if the retailer used your email address only for sending the receipt, rather than also helpfully adding you their mailing list.

That's interesting to know! Wasn't aware of that.

If that was to happen - where would you prefer to receive your receipts provided they're sent automatically as you pay?
    Text-messages, Emails, Whatsapp, anything else?
  • you dont need a paper receipt for personal things you are never going to return like food and drink.

I'll return food or drink if it's of unsatisfactory quality.

And I check my statements. A couple of months ago I had two Tesco entries on the same day. That's unusual, but checking the receipts showed I went back for something else (and what it was). Without that I could easily have had a possibly fraudulent contactless transaction.

I'm a little reluctant to use Google Pay simply because my phone (which has NFC) doesn't have a fingerprint reader, so I'd need to use a PIN instead.

However, my reluctance is probably somewhat illogical, as I was perfectly happy to use a PIN with my card in pre-contactless days!

I'm a fairly late convert to contactless card payments but I still haven't made the mental leap to using phone payments. I guess it's a habit thing and I just wouldn't feel comfortable leaving the house with just a phone and no wallet and some cash backup. A card isn't going to run out of battery power.

I was thinking more of pubs and restaurants

Trust me, if a restaurant meal gets returned the next day I'm certainly going back for a refund :rotfl:  :rotfl:  :rotfl:

last year i got charged £58 instead of £28 on my phone. it wasn't until some hours later that i noticed the error and returned to the pub and they gave me the £30 difference in cash.

it was only because you have to physical swipe the total amount notification to clear it that i spotted the error. i almost certainly wouldn't have noticed the error on my bank statement.
