Sorry you are right, there is such a thing as the download chart and as you say, no one really cares about it and it is not considered really a chart in its own right since they merged the physical and download sales into one chart.
My point is that we are aiming for the main chart which includes a combination of physical and digital. This is at the moment around a 50/50 split on most hit records therefore we need to sell twice as many downloads on download only to hit the top spots. If we were in the top 10 we would automatically be in the top 2 or so of the download chart but the top 10 singles would be what counted. We are both right - no one cares about the download chart...including this campaign - it is aimed at the main top 40.

I get the impression that if Martin had have farted into a tin can and asked people to make it the Christmas number 1 people would still be buying it and saying how wonderful it was

Ivan,
If somebody that had saved me over a thousand pounds asked me to buy "a fart in a can" from them for 50p, then Yes I would and without any hesitation. My debt of gratitude is worth far more than that.
Of course I wouldn't say fart in a can was wonderful, or at least I wouldn't be able to say it with any degree of sincerity. I don't think the song is wonderful either - it's catchy, important and a bit of fun, but not "wonderful".0 -
Why buy poppies? I put money in the British Legion collecting box in November not because I think little paper poppies are wonderful, but to support the good cause. Some people won't buy a poppy because they disagree with the war or for another similar reason. I respect their opinion and would never tell them that they are wrong.
It's exactly the same here. If you disagree with the protest (in other words you think that the banks have done nothing wrong) then obviously you have your opinion, which I respect and you should keep your 50p in your pocket.
However, for the people who dont have an objection to the protest, especially those that have already gained financially from taking Martin's advice, then they should do the decent thing, buy the download (whether they actually like the music or not) and give a little bit back.0
