we had 3 children and now have grandchildren however we arent the only ones that did so i just had to let some steam off all kids now left home and married. Just i think she feels this is our time and were cleared out so to speak. We got our own house and such but i just cant get my head round how people can afford to retire some having more income from their pensions than if they carried on working. One is ex police retired early three plus holidays inc safaris and such each year and then lets everyone know. still that life we just went wrong at the crossroads somewhere. My wifes sister owns a property abroad which they let out not once has she offered it to any of the family Probaly because she wouldnt like to ask for £650 pw which they advertise it for in the summer, Its fully booked anyway lol. Onwards and upwards

    What are your pension pots?
Police pensions are very good, not a lot of occupational pensions will compare.

I'd stop trying to get your head round what income other people have and what they do with it.

Re your wife's sister's property - it is their business to do with as they will.
You said yourself - it's fully booked.
Would you - or any of the rest of the family - pay £650 per week to stay in the property?
If you wouldn't, why would you expect to get it at a reduced rate?
If a member of my family had property abroad, I'd expect to pay the going rate to stay in it.

I think you are in danger of coming across as having a chip on your shoulder.
I'd work on not resenting other people's lifestyles.

Maybe you don't have 'plod pensions' because you didn't join the police force...

With respect, you seem to be letting yourself become obsessed with what others have.

If you're (both?) working 60 hour weeks what is your money otherwise going on? I would be focusing on that rather than on what other people are doing or how they have got there.

Ridiculous. I work in the NHS and have zero chance of retiring at 55.

I have worked in the NHS for nigh on 30 years and if I were to retire at 55 my pension would be approx £13k a year (we get very heavily penalised for each year we take it early) hardly enough to live off and 100% not the golden goose you seem to think it is.

The new 2015 section is slightly improved, but penalises heavily by -5% for each year before 67 that you take it

I f I were to retire at 67 my pension would be approx £22k

As an aside, buying a foreign property to rent out is a business proposition and they are treating it as such.

Giving it free to family members could perhaps cost them several thousand a year which could be difference between covering their costs and breaking even or losing money on it.

There are plenty of very cheap foreign holidays available if that is your desire without having to spend large sums of money, particularly if you are prepared to book last minute.

Check the likes of holiday pirates for some really cracking deals.

I'd be asking myself why they haven't anything else to brag about.

Early retirement is not always something to be envied. There are plenty of people who just don't know what to do with themselves once work is no longer taking up most of their time. If holidays are dominating their conversations I would be thinking that the rest of their lives are pretty empty.

Here, this will really pee you off

My plod step dad claimed his plod pension for more years then he actually served and mum is still getting it 10 years after his death. Plus she gets her Local government pension, plus her state pension

Neither me nor DH have a pension worth talking about, Ive an old NHS one which I cant claim to Im 60 now I think, Mr S is having to rely on state pension, Ive got to put in another 11 years of full stamp before I can claim mine

Cant mind the last time we "went on holiday", must have been 4 or 5 years ago

But are we jealous of mum? Not at all. They made their choices on what to do with their income at a young enough age to invest ahead. We made our choice to smoke, drink, buy cars, party hard etc etc etc ( as well as bringing up the kids and now subsidising the grandkids )

    We all had choices

As for the constant whinge of " my FS pension was stolen from beneath my feet" , well that don't wash. Mine was also changed, my retirement date has also been changed - twice so far - but I had the choice to save more of my income and invest, but nope I chose to buy a new car and carry on partying

No way am I going to be going all green eyed at friends retirements

Is it bragging or are they living to a different set of values?

The O/P is coming across as a little bitter and having a chip on their shoulder and thus is perhaps over sensitive to other people doing what they perceive as "normal" things to them - nice holiday, etc.
