Does anyone have any idea where i can get reasonable multi car insurance i have had some quotes but they seem quite steep and no cheaper than insuring separately Thanks

Admiral are widely advertising multi-car insurance at the moment.

I don't know if you can get multi-car quotes through the comparison sites but it's a fact that you can get better quotes from them through the comparison sites (confused, gocompare) than you can directly from their own web site.

For the same policy with Admiral I was quoted typically below £730 via comparison sites, and £790 on Admiral's own website.

Ended up saving >£300 on my renewal price of £1050 by shopping around using Martin's method. Couldn't find any extra cashbacks but still happy with what I saved.

    Thanks MSE.
  • Hi everyone.

Im insured with Elephant 03 plate 1.4 fiesta zetec, have 3 yrs no claims and no convictions. Yet my insurance (including breakdown, personal injury and extra hire car cover) has gone up by around £50 in total this year. How is it that if I havent claimed and now have another years bonus it can go up???

The only thing I can think of i that they must have paid out for alot of claims last yr and are recouping their costs.

Can anyone recommend any insurers? I did martins system and only managed to shave £5 off my renewal price. My insurance is £900. Right before christmas!

Any recommendations of where to look or anything which I could use to lower my renewal with elephant would be much appreciated.

    Thanks :)

Is that 3 yrs no claims up from 2 yrs no claims last year, or has the number of years stayed the same? I had 3 yrs no claims last year, this year was increased to 4 yrs as I had no claims the year before. Might be worth querying the number of years no claims and how often this is supposed to increase?

Another tip - phone your insurance company and ask them for a letter confirming your level of no claims bonus. If they think you are about to move they may offer you a discount.

If your car is an 03 plate might be possible that premiums increase slightly as the car is more likely to need repairs or break down as it gets older, but £50 seems a lot!

Is there anyone else on your policy who might have had an accident in another vehicle and this has increased your premiums?

Do you belong to any organisations which might entitle you to car insurance discounts elsewhere, for example RAC, or if you work for a company that owns a car insurance company, i.e. HBOS employees get 15% off at Sheila's Wheels. Some current accounts offer cheaper car insurance, but as you have to pay a monthly premium unless you use all the other services on offer may not be worth it.

The postcode where you live might have an increased loading this year due to lots of accidents/breakins - might be worth checking with neighbours if their premiums have increased a lot.

If you park you car on a road, could you reduce your premiums by keeping it overnight elsewhere, i.e. lockup, driveway etc.

What are you declaring you annual mileage as? Mine was declared as 12,000 but in reality I was doing about 8,500 so I decreased my annual mileage declaration to 10,000 miles (extra 1,500 to allow for holidays etc.).
  • Hi, This great site has saved me loads of cash, so now I appear to have come across a top money saving tip thats not on this site, I thourght I'ld post it

Basically, when you take out your annual car insurance, they always charge you around £25 for the additional legal cover.

Personally I wouldnt be without it, but i wondered if i could get it cheaper. Well, it looks like I found a website where you get it for FREE.

Check out www. yourkey.info ( had to put spaces infront of yourkey as i cant link as new member)

I cant see a catch, but then again i'm not a solicitor. Have a look and see what you think.

  • Can I ask a question please?

I found OneCall Direct via confused.com and was quoted £185.45 for 3rd party, fire and theft. I was redirected to the OneCall website and when I received a call from their rep (I had submitted my mobile number as part of the process). I confirmed I would be taking up their insurance but not for 2 weeks (when my existing insurance expired) because I pay up front in full and there was no advantage to paying that far in advance.

I rang back two weeks later (the quote was still valid) and the young girl was badgering me into buying Comprehensive but I repeatedly stated it was not worth it for me as my car is only worth about £500. She eventually gave up and went through all the questions with me to set up the 3rd party, fire and theft at £185.45. I refused all frills like breakdown etc.

She then took my Visa debit card details and confirmed she had set up the insurance.

OneCall have a green policy so all documents are electronic. I finally managed to get them to send my documents but upon immediately opening noticed that they had sety me up with fully Comprehensive and had debited my card with £202.40.

I contacted them (by email as I like to have a copy of everything). Four emails later, they are refusing to admit they have done anything wrong and skirt around the subject by saying 3rd party isn't available with the underwriter they have placed me with etc. They even have the cheek to say if I want 3rd party I will have to pay and extra £45 because it's more expensive. They even say if I want to cancel the Comprehensive insurance, they will charge me a fee!

I believe but am not sure, that they have committed a criminal offence.

What is the offence they have commited, is it theft, fraud etc?

Should I just take out insurance with another company today and ring up my bank (A&L) to have the money refunded back into my bank as it was taken unlawfully?

Will this affect future car insurance because OneCall have turned nasty (even though they are the perpatrators) and may put an unfair flag against me?

If I get the money refunded, should I then calculate £185.40 / 365 days to work out how much I should send them a cheque for (approx. 14 days worth) or do I not need to send them anything?

WHo dow I make complaints to, the police, the FSA, I have no idea.

Thanks, I am sitting her pulling my hair out and with steam coming out of my ears.

Ours went up by £100!

    Phew... that's a lot!

I have been on the GoCompare and the MoneyMarket? website but have, each time, just been looking at the quotes when one of them has rung me. I ended up buying, cos the date was getting nearer, and found that the £25 refund promised by MoneyMarket ? waould only be applied a fortnight after the policy was in operation. AND if I used the so called cooling off period to cancel I would be charged all sorts of admin charges.

Hey! its dog eat dog out there!

Not sure if this has been mentioned before but if you are a member of a Trade Union it is worth checking out the benefits of the legal package that comes with your membership. Often or not it is the same solicitors that cover the unions regardless of which one. Most people assume that it is for employment related claims however you may be surprised to find its also covers non work related issues including car insurance claims which was not your fault. As a trade union activist this is something we promote when pointing out benefits of membership so if you are in one go check it out. It also saves having the legal cover on home insurance.
  • I was shocked to discover some dodgy quoting yesterday as I looked for a quote on money supermarket and confused.com. A company called My Motor Quote came out top with the cheapest price. When I called to query how much the excess would be, the customer services guy butted in to inform me that the quote was based on a few assumptions. This before I had uttered a word about my query. Their assumption was that I had four years no claims bonus. When I filled in my details I made it clear I did not have any.
It dawned on me that this was a ploy to put itself at the top of the list. Their reasoning was that the average person has four years no claims. Minor discreprencies in the info you give to an insurer can invalidate your insurance so how can any reputable insurer even conceive basing a quote on "assumptions".

i have used price comparison websites many times in the past and i have never seen this sort scheming. users beware and always double check before you buy on line.

I just had this happen pretty much.

I also got a quote online and changed a few of the details (because they assumed so much..), the site was quoting me £700. Once I had changed the period i've had my licence from '3 - 4 years' to '2 - 3 years' the quote went up by £300. Funnily enough, by changing the number of miles I would be doing from 10,000 to 4,000 it only decreased by £50 or so.

    What a rip off.
  • Bit new to all this forum stuff but can any one help me.

I've just changed my car and when changing the insurance the premiums have gone through the roof but I have luckily had a good quote from another company but the company I am with at the moment want £105 to cancel the insurance with them, I only renewed the insurance on 16.10.09 so they have had one months money already and now they want £105 all for just one months insurance and admin costs I assume.

Is there anything I can do about this???

    Thanks
