  • I am so depressed. I am a female driver with 20+ years driving experience, no claims, no points on my licence and a protected full 'no claims' (so called) bonus! What is the point when I can't get a decent renewal quote?

My car is a 2 year old Nissan Micra (not exactly top of the range!) Last year fully comp cover cost me an annual price of £458 ... my renewal with the same company is a staggering £601 (Why?!?!?!) and I can't seem to get a new quote under £550. I resent having to pay an addition £100 for a car that is now a year older etc, blah blah blah ...

    As I say, I am depressed :(
  • HI
We've been with Direct line for years and they have always been the cheapest and the most stright forward people, happy to reduce a quote when ever possible.
This year my husband (policy holder) gained 3points on his licence for SP30 and our insurance rockets - which I expected. Direct line gave us such a high renewal quote that I looked elsewhere. The cheapest I found was nearly £200 cheaper! I went back to Direct Line to challenge them and to see what they could do. But for some unexplained reason our account has been "frozen" with the quote they have given us and the people have said that they can't do anything to help us out. Something which, they say, is out of their control. Basically their 'computer says NO'. I really don't understand it!
Any help and wisdom gratefully recieved.:(

  • Hi,

This is the first time that I have ever posted on a Web-forum. But I am so incensed by what has just happened to me re: my Car Insurance, that I felt that I should warn other unsuspecting motorists.

Having trawled my way through the various comparison sites, I opted for echoice, part of the Royal Sun Alliance group, to insure my Rover 45 Turbo-diesel.

The price was excellent and, as the name implies, everything is conducted on-line - even to downloading and printing out my Certificate of Motor Insurance.

It was only when I had printed out the Certificate, that I realised that I was NOT covered to drive other cars. When I emailed to 'live-chat' to a Customer Service person, I was told that echoice does not provide this cover on ANY of their policies.

This means that the policy that I have just paid for is absolutely useless to me, as I regularly drive my son's car to collect our grandchildren from school.

The 'Live-chat' person said that many other Insurers are not providing cover to enable motorists to drive other cars - 'due to increasing costs'.

To make it worse, I was told that I must telephone the Customer Service number to cancel the policy. They are not open at week-ends and it will cost me £25 for the privilege of cancelling!

I accept that, if I had read the policy booklet IN DETAIL it would have stated that I could not drive other cars - but in all my years 43 years of driving, this is the first time I have come across this.

So beware: Before paying for a Policy - check the wording VERY carefully, otherwise you may be driving uninsured!!!

Much as I hate defending insurers, it is quite a good website for information on the cover, and is stated in the keyfacts in the policy summary.
"This policy does not provide cover for driving any vehicle other than the
vehicle whose registration number is shown on the Certificate of Motor
    Insurance."

There are a few that still cover DOC, but are the exception now. I use CSIS.

That is very strange. I have just bought a motor policy from Aviva online with myself and my wife as named drivers. I do not have any occasion to drive anyone else's car, and the policy shows my name and my wife's name as named drivers but also:

"The drivers may also drive a Motor Car which:

    1. does not belong to them
    2. is not a rental car
    3. is not hired to them under a hire purchase or rental agreement

providing they are driving with owner's express consent"

I can understand your frustration. But it should be noted that car insurance is not only related to the value of your car; it is related to a host of risks.
  • Having trawled through all of the sites finding to "best" price then going through cashback sites in an attempt to get a honest good quote i was amazed to find my insurance quote cheapest by going direct to the same company and saving £440 !!! this is what happened ....
Top Cashback to Aviva website entered all details quoted £630 TPFT ,
    Aviva online Quoted £330 TPFT!!!
Phonecall from Aviva quoted £190 TPFT!!!! Yay ! ok so no cashback but who cares!
I think its about time avery large amount of honesty and simplicity was introduced to this car insurance business ! i can understand each different company having their own particuler quoting structure resulting in competition between insurance companys ie the same car the same details = quote the only difference being the insurance companies perseaved risk specific to them but from one company via different affiliations or routes to them the price should be the same !!
Also if it is the law to have car insurance why should we the motorist be left to the wolves "comercial companies" if the government wanted to raise some money why dont they offer a basic no frills car insurance that covers the law and then then the motorist if he/she wants more benefits /cover opt out of the government insurance and go to a commercial company,
Does anyone think this is a good idea ?
i welcome your comments on this ! lets start a change in this overpriced unfair commercialisation
