They actually come out top of on the comparison website, but higher than my renewel quote, so I'll probably stick with them. However, I'm moving house a month into my policy and have done another search on the comparison websites (my existing lender again coming out top) and the quote on my new property is approximately 50% less then the renewel quote (basically because of a better postcode, residential estate and off-street parking).
My question is, if I take out the year's insurance now, can I ask them to reassess my premium when I move and get a rebate? Or can I cancel my insurance after a month and take out new insurance at the lower rate? Or am I stuck with higher premium for a year?

My son is just about to get his first car, and although he is 22
..
What he has discovered, however, is that if he puts me down as a second named driver, his premium drops by a couple of hundred pounds.
I cannot understand why this should be; and what possible disadvantage could there be in my being named like this, even if I barely touch the car?
Why is it cheaper?
1) by adding an older more experienced named driver then it's likely that at least some of the car's mileage will actually be driven by a less risky driver
2) the new driver is probably less likely to take excessive risks when driving with an experienced driver as a passenger
3) Driving on long journeys is less risky if there is another driver to share with, so avoiding fatigue.
They all sound very vague but presumably the insurers' claims records support their decision to offer cheaper cover if there is an experienced named driver.

I just got a quote on comparison sites for my Mitsubishi Pajero £1700 best quote (25, 3yrs no claims) 3pft.
so i went on the pajero owners club and got a quote from their recommended specialist insurer £450!!!! Adrian Flux was £557.
so google for specialist insurers if you have an import or sports car or something0 -
Not sure if anyone else has had the same problem, however I signed up with Swinton Car insurance to insure my 20 year old pajero. I got nice quote of around £360 tpft with an excess which would make claiming against it impossible.
Well the day came when we decided that we wanted a more modern vehicle, so phoned up Swinton and asked them to change insurance to a new car. Now before we bought the car we looked up the new insurance to find it was fairly much the same premium, even though I went fully comprehensive, the car was worth £4,500 and I was going to do more miles as would start using more. I put this down to the Pajero being an import which apparantly attracts a premium.
I was then told that I would have to pay another £440 odd on top of the £360 just to change insurance to the new vehicle. Thats £800 per year for insurance for a 45 year old who has had one accident in the last 25 years!!
The only other option I have was to cancel the original insurance and get a new policy, cancellation charge is around £50 as of course I pay my insurance monthly, and the new insurance wanted £105 deposit. Still cheaper than the proposed £440, however now feel that if it was not for this hugh price hike from what I thought was an established company who dealt with their clients fairly, I would not have had to spend out £155 this month on insurance. The new policy cost me £418 for the complete year and was fully comprehensive, with a car valued at £4500. I also added further miles to my yearly use and £500 less excess....I did not even get around to asking for this whilst on the phone to my insurer.
I am going to write to the company however don't hold out much hope so am going to get nasty and just say, if you get car insurance, avoid Swinton especially if you think you are going to change cars in that year.0 -
After graduating i worked in Insurance for a bit - Tips for young drivers. Always have your parents on the policy - It typically reduced premiums by hundreds!! Tips for us? A car roughly 6-7 Years old are normally the cheapest to insure. Anything older and they become "less safe or more likely to breakdown" - anything newer "more expensive to repair or payout for" - Hope that helps!!0

Hi all,
A few months ago my car was parked on my drive and my mother-in-law reversed onto the drive into the side of my car, i phoned my insurance to get them to contact her insurance (what a big mistake!!!) i didnt end up going through my insurance in the end as her insurance contacted me directly a few days later.
Come to re-new my insurance and the premium went from 270 last year to 440 so i phoned and they said it was to do with the risk factor. as there was an (information only on my file of the incident) i have become a higher risk. and there is nothing i can do about it... or is there?? can anyone help?? I wasn't in the car the car was parked on my drive and i didn't calm. Can they really use "information only" to increase my policy..:mad::mad:0 -
You have to inform them of all incidents you are involved in, not just claims.
Shop around for your renewal - though you must declare the incident to all new insurers you approach.0 -
It would be worth including in the article that Aviva carries out credit checks on anyone obtaining an insurance quotation.
They appear to be the only insurer to do so at the quotation stage.
Implications for multiple credit checks (in case anyone wonders why it matters) are here: Credit Rating0 -
Something called legal assistance has crept into car insurance over the last couple of years. Does anyone know if this is worth having?0
