It is business/commercial use as I see it. Therefore the risk is deemed to be greater. For example, as a hire car driver he might be ferrying some high earning celebrity around and then be involved in an accident that causes the celebrity to be unable to continue their lucrative trade. The celebrity may then make a huge claim on his insurance, potentially running into millions of pounds. So perhaps you can see how the risk is deemed to be greater?

Your right, having thought about it, the risk is of course so much higher as he will be carrying passengers so the insurer will be deeming that as high risk as it could be anyone!
Obviously, Martins article on cutting insurance premiums isn't going to be relevant here as that relates onto to non-business use. Does anyone know any brokers/screen-scrapers or specialist insurers who specialise in hired car drivers. Looking for any way to MoneySave!

I am about to renew may car insurance its due 21st June. Last year I paid £298.00, the cheapest I can find this year is £604.00 why? I have had no claims, I have 7 years NCB, I have been driving for over 25 years. I knew they where going up but this is ridicuolus. I have been on every comparison site and they are all around the same price.

Unfortunatley I need a car to get to work as I work 30 miles away from home and the public transport doesn't come near here. I am at my wits end!! Any ideas anyone.

The Days where if you are at no blame and some idiot runs in to you you call your insurance are over, its time to think about recovering your losses direct from the other driver, if they want to get their insurance to pay the bill, let that be their problem, you should remember, you have not had an accident, they have and you have not made a claim, the person at fault has claimed your damages from their insurance.
Insurance companies are always looking at ways to pull the blanket, you still have a legal re-course to sue the driver if you are hit in a no fault accident, let them give the bill to their insurance, you are under no obligation to deal with someone else's contracted insurer. I have done it, I threatened to sue, issued papers I refused to take payment via a third party and enter a contract with them, take calls from their insurers or enter any contract with them, they paid him, he then paid me, I saved thousands in increased premiums and stayed out of their grubby little system . They still call asking for my details to update their files, the answer is due to data protection policy I am unable to provide details to non contracted parties.

    Hi Paynie,
Sorry matey thats life, we are being made fools of by the Insurance industry, they are instigating/generating/developing/ call it what you like.... this increase is all down to a selected few companies eagerly trying to force people to make false personal injury claims to generate business, this is practically the same type of scam developed by the banking industry....end of rant lol.
    Hi paynie,
I had the same problem after 3 weeks searching the only company that offered a decent quote was AVIVA, only because of a 12 week discount so thats 25% of your quotes for a start that will take yours down to £450 and believe me thats good now, Direct line were are doing the same deal but I cannot see any reference to it on there site.

As Martin says premiums are much cheaper this time of year . I did a similar scan of all the comparison sites in July and the cheapest available was £395 for the cover I wanted. This Saturday, when I genuinely wanted the insurance, I got the same cover (with a lesser excess) for £255. Moreover, at present there is an offer of free rescue/recovery/Homestart when you take out car insurance with Prudential - it lasts until 31 December. As Prudential happened to be the cheapest premium anyway for me it was a real bargain getting free breakdown insurance for the first year. Prudential may be competitive for others. It is chance I am getting insurance in Nov, but as well as being cheaper this year renewals will be cheaper in future years.

wish i could an insurance quote at that price or even a bit higher...my son has been quoted £6000 and thats the cheapest we got.....highest being £19000

what's going on, the colt should be dead cheap?

I've just bought a Colt, a 2008 1.5 diesel auto (Group 5), because my modded car is costing too much in fuel to use every day. The cheapest quote from the comparison sites was £598!! Compared to my modified car insurance costs I'd think that the Colt was another sportscar :(
I was honestly expecting something around £300-350; I'm in my 40's, no claims for 8 years, no convictions.
The wife has a Megane cabrio (group 19), 3 points, one bump last year and paid £750 renewal last month.

Can someone explain how that works, other than we are being had over for trying to be frugal?
