Norfolk is remote, Cornwall is in a different league
It's a long way from everywhere else and the gap between wages and house prices is wider than just about everywhere else too.
It's so beautiful
true though re the wages and house prices - I know it's v deprived in some (most?) areas 0 -
Cornwall's coastline is exceptional, but the interior isn't so great in most places, compared with Devon. Around Truro's nice, and nicely expensive too, but then so is Salcombe and many other parts of Devon's South Hams. Anywhere so heavily dependent on tourism is going to be economically iffy. I won't pretend parts of Devon, like Torbay and Ilfracombe, don't have this problem too. It's so beautiful

Where I am, everyone seems to be a farmer or a builder, or retired and from elsewhere. That's not true, of course, but because people choose to be here for the scenery and relative peace, the combination of locals and incomers works OK. If people want more razzamatazz they soon clear off!
To my mind, Ceredigion is the Welsh scenic equivalent of Devon, and probably beats it for the rolling hills & valleys type of beauty. Economically, however, it's a backwater....and there's the language thing.0 -
The majority of it was shotguns for farmers and rifles for gamekeeping and competition shooting. ID and licenses fully checked at all times so all legal and above-board. Definitely one of my more interesting jobs though and I did get to drive the country end to end every few weeks without using the motorways much, the point of my post being that I can't think of anywhere in the country that I haven't driven within 30 miles of.
Thank you, Slithery; I know you had no need to explain this. Having thunk about it, I suppose Parcelforce wouldn't quite cut it, would they? :eek:To my mind, Ceredigion is the Welsh scenic equivalent of Devon, and probably beats it for the rolling hills & valleys type of beauty. ... But you can understand Devonians? :rotfl: I can say that, half my family hails from there.0 -
do you speak Welsh? I know English is widespread but they actively seek Welsh speakers for jobs in NHS...
No, we're mid-Wales and it's actually quite rare to hear Welsh being spoken around here, North Wales is quite different though.
I'm English while my girlfriend is Welsh and has lived here all her life; neither her nor any of her very large family speak a word of Welsh.Every generation blames the one before...

I moved to Sheffield 22 years ago from Cornwall for work, would love to move back to the South West, maybe Devon rather than Cornwall, that way I am near my relatives but not to near. I really miss the sea.
Unless I win the lottery I'll probably wait until I retire. House prices are in issue but not as much as you'd think."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0 -
Oh, there bain't no prapper Deb'n spoke now. That all went backalong, when um knocked it out of ee in big school, 1960s on.
:T My uncle used to talk like that! He was the only one who could and the youngest of five. All the rest were brought up to speak "properly", as was I... Where did it all go wrong, innit?
Many apologies, BeattieOG, all.0 -

More realistically OH would like to move to Dorset, but I'd rather go to Hampshire, close to Dorset, close to London and depending which bit of Hampshire we picked only a bit over an hour to go home to my Parents
I was born and brought up in Hampshire and now live in Dorset. Both lovely places
We lived in Devon for 14 years and if I had loads of money would move within easy reach of Budleigh Salterton. It’s got the best croquet club in Europe, oh the problems of retirement :rotfl:0
