There’s lots of traffic but it’s also great to have many options for public transport like tube, bus, cycle, walk. I don’t drink a lot but it’s lovely to be able to be free to have a glass of wine with dinner without negotiating a nominated driver.

I think it all boils down to what you like doing. I avoid public transport at all costs, but the traffic in the South East is terrible. And I don't really go out, so I'm not worried about having an abundance of social venues on my doorstep. So moving North is my ultimate goal.

But I can see how certain lifestyles suit city living.

I'm perfectly happy with my small bit of land in Norfolk :)

Was just going to say the same. We retired here, looked at other areas but south Norfolk was perfect for us.

That's high on our list for all of your reasons! Also it has a GREAT NHS Trust

Also on our list - we've been looking at houses in the Broads, so beautiful

Check it out in the summer holidays though it can get quite busy with holiday makers. Same as parts of north Norfolk.

Really loving Leigh on Sea still. Will retire somewhere quieter unless I need to be near family. Need to be near a town, not a tiny or remote village. Need the sea. Maybe Frinton on Sea (my MIL is there) :D

lisyloo - sounds perfect. Would like a London bolthole. Would be handy if I do move further out eventually as most of my friends I meet in town and I would prob still be heading up there to see them.

I've stayed in a quiet street behind Selfridges/off Baker St several times before and it was quite a surreal experience. There's something quite lovely about walking round quiet streets of Central London late at night. My ex used to live near Baker St tube and loved it. Lots of green space in London. Around a third of it is green (not including people's gardens).

Well we are hoping to move from Essex to Suffolk. Wouldn't want to be too far from family but we both love the Suffolk villages and towns and especially Bury St Edmunds.

Are we talking fantasy or doable?
If fantasy I don’t think the place I would like to move to exists. A town big enough to have sustainable shops , good public transport and accessible green spaces . Not too pretty because then it gets mobbed with tourists and that makes the summer rather miserable. Oh and I would need to be able to afford a house there .
Reality I am now thinking city because smallish towns really don’t have the above listed things . Often surrounded by open country but farm land is no use to walk in .
Think that by being an ‘I’ now rather than a ‘we’ makes a very big difference. One you only realise when it happens.

I was born in the east end of London (Whitechapel) and moved to Essex in 2001. We're about to retire to Exeter.

I think you've just described Exeter.

Somewhere around the Berkshire/Hampshire/Surrey borders. Imo one of the nicest areas and good for tech jobs. I have no interest in living in London or a large city. Had to move away to actually be able to afford a house (to Northants) and one day I might move back south if I ever get to the point where I can earn twice as much as what I do now to be able to afford it.
