Argyle and Bute, right on the Clyde and amazing scenery to walk in while just over an hour from Glasgow. If I could find a way to make money remotely I'd be gone.0

Cornwall's coastline is exceptional, but the interior isn't so great in most places, compared with Devon. Around Truro's nice, and nicely expensive too, but then so is Salcombe and many other parts of Devon's South Hams. Anywhere so heavily dependent on tourism is going to be economically iffy. I won't pretend parts of Devon, like Torbay and Ilfracombe, don't have this problem too.
Where I am, everyone seems to be a farmer or a builder, or retired and from elsewhere. That's not true, of course, but because people choose to be here for the scenery and relative peace, the combination of locals and incomers works OK. If people want more razzamatazz they soon clear off!
To my mind, Ceredigion is the Welsh scenic equivalent of Devon, and probably beats it for the rolling hills & valleys type of beauty. Economically, however, it's a backwater....and there's the language thing.
We're considering a move to North Devon with our 2 kids (8 and 5) - any thoughts? I have a job interview in Barnstaple in a weeks time.0 -

Barnstaple's a solid, workaday town and because it's on an estuary, not the coast, prices are reasonable.
North Devon isn't as busy as South Devon, which has a higher population and the M5 dumping traffic onto the through routes of A30 and A38. I can usually drive in and out again with no problems.
Lots of nice small towns and villages around Barnstaple if you prefer the country life. Places like South Molton, for example, which has an excellent senior school.
Only you know if you'll fit into the area. There's plenty of pretty countryside, excellent beaches and quaint villages, but nothing is on a grand scale and the pace is slower than down south.0 -

We're stuck in suburbia right now and it's driving me mad0 -

I love South Molton
It used to be 30p to park
. May have gone up now.
If you move to this area you’ll be able to take the kids to the Big Sheep0 -

Yes, 50p now, but I remember when it was free!0 -
In 2016 we ended up buying a 2 bedroom Victorian terraced house in Southgate London for £420K it's got a big garden and ample loft space to convert into 2 more bedrooms. The area has good schools, lots of green space and we are only 10 minutes walk to the tube BUT no off street parking :wall:

Good luck0 -
Where we live now - North Pennines in Co Durham, in an area of outstanding beauty, in a lovely cottage with views to die for. It’s cheap round here too!0
