I can't see how the Gideon bible can offend anyone, people who are of other faiths and or non faith at all, don't have to read the bible. If the worse comes to it, I am sure the hospital would remove it.
I am not sure whether other faiths have objected at all, it maybe just the political correctness.
This story is a fine example of what happens when the media decides to ignore the facts behind a story. The hospital in question actually said that the main reason for not putting bibles next to every bed was to help in the fight against MRSA. They actually said that bibles (and any other religious text required) would still be available to anyone - all the patient would have to do is ask a nurse.
I always think people look at these arguments (what's wrong with the country, etc) the wrong way round. Why not spend your time thinking about how you can make things better? It's easy to sit and moan, much harder to actually get up and do something.0 -

Every silver lining has a cloud...

I am making things better in my area at least. Two years ago ran a campaign which got national publicity on traffic claiming, although sadly we are still waiting for the council to act, should be soon though. The other week me and some volunteers built some steps on a old railway line to improve access for able bodied people, unfortunately we don't have the resources for disabled, although we are going to amend that next month. I am member of my home town's integrated transport and friends of the old railway line. I am also a member of a group trying to keep foods local and environmental issues addressing.
I do agree though that a lot of people ain't prepared to do anything to improve, or they feel they cant make a difference, too much apathy in this country.
So sockospice before you have time to critize me, perhaps you shouldn't prejudge people unless you know them. Incidentally what have you done?
No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you0 -
There's actually no proof that the Gideon bible has caused MRSA its a red herring.
My mother in law was in the hospital week before last, and the ward was dirty, if you want to blame MRSA blame doctors for giving to many antibiotics out so readily, hospitals for not cleaning wards properly and letting some people in that are dirty.

It's irrelevent what I have or haven't done. You don't need examples of what I do for the community, suffice to say I practice what I preach.
I was actually making a comment on how the media can spin an issue to suit their own agenda (eg that particular story got a lot of coverage in the Daily Mail), I merely quoted from your post as it described the situation I wanted to address. MRSA is a complicated issue. It 'has' AFAIK been shown that it can be passed on by touching, so I would think that it would be only sensible that anything that can be done to remove risk, would be. Of course, hospitals could be cleaner etc etc, but that's another issue entirely.
I think you've overreacted if you take that comment personally. I didn't criticise you - I made a general comment about how, as you say, there is too much apathy and complaining in this country, and not enough going out and making a difference. So you go out and make a difference, good for you. Fact is, too many people don't.0 -

MRSA will be on any surface that an infected person has touched. So if the bible is being picked up by successsive occupiers of a bed, it is going to be a small risk, and when I saw that given as an explanation for removing the bibles it suddenly all made sense to me.
Did you know that cleaning can actually help MRSA to spread. Why? ... because the area is cleaned, after it is cleaned the bacteria most likely to colonise the clean area is MRSA because it is resistant. However, cleaning a hospital is still very important for obvious reasons.
If you take swabs from various surfaces in hospitals you will find MRSA on all sorts of surfaces. This is why people who go to hospital are at risk, because they are ill to begin with, their immune systems are not strong, then they touch MRSA somewhere - anywhere - that is how they get infected.0 -
It wasn't THAT long ago the working classes were working in the fields for the Lords of the Manor in return for a bowl of gruel and a haystack to sleep in, and personally I think ALL of the political parties would just love things to return to those days where the poor lived in the gutter and tugged their forelocks whenever the rich handed out alms after church.0

Sorry I have been away from MSE for the best part of the week trying to steer things my way!chugalug wrote:OP I believe you want 'your ' country back but it doesnt sound much like the country I know and want to keep. I'm glad we're becoming a bit more progressive but then being female, from a council estate with no education (yes even in 1978 some of us left school with no qualifications and a pregnancy to boot!!) I suspect you wouldnt want people like me in 'your' country. I'm glad my daughter gets to meet all sorts of people from all sorts of cultures, I'm glad my son learns to appreciate that the world view of Britain is not the only view there is and I'm glad society is trying to become more inclusive even if that does mean there are mistakes made. What you read in the papers and see on the news is there because it's newsworthy not necessarily because it's representative. I'd rather live here than anywhere else, time marches on and we'd better keep up!!
I am not sure why you think you differ from me, but I can tell you that I came from a council estate too. My parents are working class through and through and didn't even have a telephone put in until I left home to go to university in 1975. I think they got a colour telly about the same time you left school and when I left university to start work, the first tv I bought was second hand and black and white.
If by inclusive you mean there's a living to be made or even something for nothing for anyone willing to keep up with and in with the throng, then I hear you, but I heard 9 out of 10 cats expressed a preference, and I reckon I am one of those.0 -
Hi Peterbaker, nice to see you back!! Perhaps what I was trying to say is that you appear to be having a 'Daily Mail' rant at the world in general. From that, I assumed, (perhaps wrongly) that in line with the typical DM reader you wouldnt want people like me in this mythical country that has always been better than it is now. You may have come from a council estate but would you want to live in one now?? I bet you've spent your whole life striving for something better than what your parents had and that's not a council house? Everyone keeps saying that the past was better than what we have today but I believe that there are more opportunities today than there have ever been should you wish to take them. When I was at school it wasnt expected that girls like me would have a career and most of us didn't. As happens today, if nothing is expected of you then nothing is what you get. Yes there are scroungers now as there were then just as there were tax dodgers then same as now - nothings changed much just that the media loves to whip up panic over some 'degenerate' sections of society (mainly the poor). Times do change and the world is more cosmopolitan now but thats not a bad thing. We seem to be very frightened of losing the way of life that we're used to - all I was saying is that not everyone's way of life is like yours and lots of us would love things to change whether that's for better or worse we'll have to wait and see.~A mind is a terrible thing to waste on housework~0
