I believe I want my country back

I don't want to see public funds spent on understanding other cultures which are not representative cultures.

Why do public authorities here need to spend money on understanding witchcraft from Angola? Apparently it's because immigration authorities have allowed Angolan child-witchhunters into the country.

Why does the Metropolitan Police have to spend money on travelling to Latvia to track down a murderer? Apparently it's because immigration authorities let a Latvian rapist into the country and let him out again, both ways on an EU passport I guess.

Why do we need "synthetic phonics" as yet another new method of learning to read? Haven't a clue. My mother taught me to read before I went to school at age 5. My wife taught my two children to read before they went to school also. My nine year old daughter writes more correctly and descriptively than most of us writing on this website. Both my children read avidly and are very accomplished computer users (already better than most office-workers). They also enjoy computer games but only average four days a month playing them. I suspect that doesn't happen in a large number of homes. Why do the rest of us have to foot the bill because so many homes are failing? Why are so many homes failing? What kind of homes? What kind of citizen?

America is being asked to double it's foreign aid budget particularly to support the tongue-chewing Gordon Brown and the undisciplined Bob Geldorf and their mixed ideas about Africa. Why exactly? Do we really believe that Africa will ever be better than the nasty mess it seems to have been for decades? Maybe if we dig out all the nasty bits, sprinkle what we've dug out all over our own country and then transfuse ... well what exactly?

Why is the BBC suggesting that we have no idea whether the magnetic fields emitted by high voltage power lines are a dangerous risk to health? Does the BBC now represent an ignorant society that doesn't know how to read and doesn't know what to believe and generally doesn't have the capacity to question what some ignorant reporter presents as a BBC news report? I guess it's maybe so. The BBC has certainly dumbed down since I went to school and I am not sure it teaches me much anymore that my working class parents didn't teach me before I actually left my front door.

And if you are laying dying of MRSA in hospital you might not be able to reach for a Gideon's bible anymore, becuase some citizens think it's discriminatory.

....just one day's news. I believe we are drifting into the mire.

Believe me, this country is going down the pan. A rapid and accelerating breakdown of social standards is dragging us down. I fear for my children and am actively seeking ways to leave the country. I have family in Norway and you would not believe how sad it makes me to come back here after visiting there.
    I despair!
I could rant and rant for hours about this and maybe I will later...

I've been despairing at the state of the country for ages. You don't need to go far to see how life can be very different. I went to the Isle of Man last month. I couldn't believe the difference. It's really made me want to emigrate there and I'm certainly looking into the options. Despite being out at night at the weekend, I wasn't afraid - no drunken violent yobs even around the pubs and clubs just "merry" youths. Very little vandalism and grafitti. Actually being served by someone who looked hygienic and spoke English in MacDonalds - now there's a first - in the UK they look like they've been dragged out of a gutter and only speak swahili. I was listening to the local radio news and was astounded to hear that the police were seeking witnesses to a crime where a shop window had been broken - in the UK the police wouldn't even bother turning up yet alone actually making the effort to investigate it! Driving was a pleasure, no speed cameras, just a lot of very sensible hazard warning signs at dangerous spots. Lots of police "walking the streets" not hiding in their Volvo and BMW police cars like in the UK. Why the difference? The Isle of Man have their own parliament which isn't affected by the cancer of political parties like the UK, they aren't governed by the UK parliament, and are free to choose which parts of the EU they want to adopt.

It was just a jest, a light hearted saying/figure of speach type thing. The kind of thing that shouldn't be taken too seriously and helps you get through life without becoming too neurotic.

Worth noting that there isn't a generation that's gone by that doesn't seem think that things were some how better when they were younger, despite the fact we've had the most prolonged period of peace in Europe combined with the highest standards of living ever.

You can nit pick all you like but for those reasons alone I would never turn back the proverbial clock.

Just what stage exactly do you want "your country back to"?

Pre war with no NHS, welfare state and acute, widespread poverty?

Or perhaps post war grim grey Britain riddled with strikes and power cuts, where all foreigners were seen as figures of amusement and abuse?

I find the title of this thread and general sub-text of the responses so far rather interesting....

Historically, the UK developed its vast resources by plundering and raping other nations. I wonder if those countries can ask for the return of their resources plus interest and compensation? Can these people ask for their country to return to the days pre-contact with Europeans?

To link yobbish and disrespectful behaviour with immigration is somewhat shameful !!

We are all living with the after effects of "liberilisation of the (suppressed) classes" coupled dumming down of the general populace and some barmy liberal views which ignored good ole common sense. Unfortunately these things are not restricted to certain cultures or ethnicity/colour.

Well I'm not entirely up on all your points but here's my response:

I think it is a good idea for police force's to get a few of their officers educated and up to date on african witchcraft if that means they can investigate child abuse better.

If someone has a European passport they can come and go as they like, so what's your point? Even if they have a non European passport many countries around the world have agreements with UK for 3 month visits not requiring visas, again what's your point? Are you wanting to check the criminal record of all the millions of people who pass through our borders each year?

The reading one, I have no idea what you're on about. I probably don't care either - so don't bother.

America is being asked....why?.... Could it be that America is one of the worlds worst performing "1st world rich countries" in terms of foriegn aid in terms of GDP ? I don't know the exact figures but it is my understanding that countries like UK, Australia, Japan give 4 times as much foriegn aid in terms of %GDP, than USA. With USA being the richest country on Earth doesn't that strike you as being slightly odd?

Will Africa ever improve?.....Well do you mean improve from the quagmire mess which the worlds richest countries have created and actively encouraged to remain as a quagmire? IF we cancel all the debt with no conditions and we allow free trade then yes Africa will improve.

BBC/magnetic fields...I have no idea, don't live near one if it troubles you.

MRSA is the result of capitalism - drug companies - antibiotics, there is a cure, but because the drug companies only want profit they aren't very keen on the cure because it is unpatentable. But never fear money is always near, the drug companies are trying to alter the cure chemically so they have created something new... something unique. Which is of course the requirement for a patent. Never mind they have a working cure NOW, they just want the money which will only come if they alter the cure to something unique.

You want a bible? take your own! and make sure you take it with you when you leave, even if you leave in a box.

Well coincidentally, when MacMillan said we never had it so good just ten days before I was born whilst standing in Bedford just thirty miles from where I was born, he might actually have been right, but I bet he didn't think it might hold true for perhaps 50 years and longer.

I spent an afternoon in the National Archives building in Kew yesterday. I could not help but notice how very polite, correct and well groomed everyone
was in that building, in the main, staff and visitors alike. Not having been there before, I could have imagined it might have felt like the atmosphere in a national museum, or a Court Building, or a Library, but it didn't. It was very busy, it wasn't overly quiet but it felt like we all shared ways of conducting ourselves that should be upheld.

What joined us together? Well I guess we were all looking for something of merit in the past to use in the future, for one.

Another one for you. There are now plans to abolise the Gideon bible in hospitaks for fear of offending other faiths. I mean people come here into our country they should have an understanding of basic English and respect our culture as we should there's.

This political correctness is going to far, what this will do is cause more resentment towards other cultures and we now where that can end up.

No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you

Yes I think this is a good idea and we should start off with all those Americans and Australians...

You are being naive if you believe Money will solve Africa's problems. I fully agree Africa is in this state because of the meddling of the West, however Africa stays in this state because of it's corrupt, greedy and inept leaders. The people in charge have a tendency to look after number one first and let the rest of the people go hang. What do you mean by free trade? How on earth do we force another country to trade freely with us? We can't, not without some sort of sanctions and then its not really free trade is it?

MRSA - nothing to do with the drug companies, they didn't create it. The dirty hospitals, the lack of basic hygiene by staff in the hospitals - I think the blame lies with the Tories for the reason we have so much of it in this country. They are the ones that deregulated the cleaners in the hospitals, that brought in the internal market into hospitals.

Well this is supposed to be a Christian country whether you believe in it or not, I don't see why bibles should be removed from hospitals because they may possibly offend someone - you don't have to look in the draw. If you spend all your time doing things so that they don't offend someone you'll end up offending everyone.
