Aww, I've been following your story Luma, but your house looks lovely! I'm glad you're settling in, you've given me hope as I'm a bit worried about that too.

Hi Smodlet! We just had the woodworm treatment yesterday. Corner floorboards replaced, an extra airbrick installed, and underneath sprayed for extra measure. They did find a rotting joist pretty badly, so replaced that too.

So we'd just had the house all nice... Now we're living on bare floorboards in the living room until we can afford carpet! The floorboards seem in good condition though, no bounciness or shifting anywhere. Just hope that this is the end of the woodworm! Horrid creatures. I suspect they might be in the kitchen, but the floor doesn't shift and money is dwindling, so it'll have to make do until we replace the flooring there.

I had a moment of feeling "eurgh" again, until my partners dad visited earlier and said how much the place has came on! Then felt like a proud puffed up parrot :D

    Baby steps.

    Hi Luma,

I have just read your journey from the beginning and wanted to say I think you are doing a great job! The changes you have made in such a short space of time is great, and I look forward to seeing your progress!

    Hi all, little update:

Still don't feel like I'm truly settling here. Some days are better than others. Found an odd woodweevil here and there too, after treatment, which has just sort of left me in a flump. We're slowly getting around to making the house look nicer, but what's the point in making it look nice if it's damaged underneath?

I'd have the company back out to check they treated properly, but honestly I can't afford to keep pulling out the money. I do think this house is gonna be a money-pit in the long run, I think maintenance hasn't been upheld by the previous owners at all.

But we shall see. Just trying the best I can to patch it up.

Read your thread again Lumabones, look at your photos, YOU are turning a house into a home, YOU are the one putting YOUR mark on YOUR home.

It's the perfect house to turn into what you want, to make it yours, yes there are a few blips along the way, these things happen, but in time it will be your home.

Good luck with counseling, with the right person it will make a huge difference to your quality of life, you will learn coping mechanisms, you will learn things go wrong, but they can be put right, most of all you know what it's like to be human.

I know you don’t want to hear this but I would get the company back... It is important to sort any fundamental issues first before making it look nice - otherwise you could end up ripping through your decor to make remedial repairs in the future, then paying again to make it nice.

The thing to keep telling yourself - and I know it’s hard when you’re struggling with your mental health - is almost no house is unsalvageable. You can repair it and then it’ll be fine. It sounds like you feel it’s ‘rotten’ with no hope for it, but it doesn’t sound like that’s the case.
  • Do you think we should just ask for advice? Like is it possible to be seeing the odd one after treatment, etc? I know with woodweevils their cycle is relatively short, 6 months to a year I believe? Do you think we'd be better off waiting until they next come out before?
I'd rather have carpet as I'm getting real sick of walking on floorboards.
And paying out another however much for them to find more work needs doing. I'm looking at the upside that carpet is a lot easier to lift and put back than laminate, so it won't feel as disruptive in the future...
Still wish I could just fill the whole thing in with concrete...
