There is a lot of crime in Bradford - in the actual city. You wouldn't want to socialise there. I worked in central Bradford - the level of security measures and the number of police warning emails circulated at work was really alarming. Bradford was named the most dangerous city in the UK in 2014 but it's not anymore (Birmingham, Manchester and Sheffield are more dangerous now).

On a different note, Bradford has the highest percentage of population of Pakistani ethnic origin (20%). Approximately 25% of population are Muslim.

In 'The Notes from a Small Island' Bill Bryson writes that the mission of Bradford is to make every other place in the world look good. He also writes about Saltaire in that book (favourably).

Saltaire is spoilt by the busy A650 running through the middle. A pity it hasn’t been bypassed and the high street pedestrianised before now. Titus would approve of that

Really? Do you have a link for that?
I would have expected it to be London, Liverpool or Manchester.

with a pinch of salt on the source, the numbers seem legit

Bradford like all cities has a mixture of neighbourhoods, good & bad. The city centre is slowly going through a revival but has a long way to go.

Your £220000 budget opens up a whole world of small towns & villages all commutable to Bradford & Leeds by train (driving in Bradfords rush hours can take forever, too many cars & insufficient roads). To the North East there is Ilkley, Burley in Wharfdale & Menston. North West there is Shipley, Baildon, Saltaire, Bingley, Crossflatts, Keighley (does have some nice parts) Silsden/Steeton. To the South & South West there is Halifax (& all the stops on that line.

Of course you may not be bothered with all that commuting by train mullarkey and in that case I would live in the following areas Wyke, Wibsey, Clayton, Queensbury (though gets very cold in Winter), Idle, Thornton, Wrose, Denholme, Haworth, Cullingworth, Harden, Cottingley. To confuse things Drighlington to the South (& only 4miles from Bfd city centre is part of Leeds city council area). Next to Drig is Birkenshaw again 4miles from Bfd city centre (yet comes under Kirklees/Huddersfield council)

Is it just you that is relocating or is there a family as well?

    Thats about all for now.

It’s just me. I don’t mind the train commute. I looked at Pudsey. It looks like a good in between between working 4 days a week in Bradford and driving to Leeds in the evening. I have friends and family live in Manchester so easy access to motorway to Manchester would be good too

I work in Bradford now and again and for a city it doesn't really offer much. Leeds is much much better. Pudsey is a nice place.
A relative works in Bradford and lives in Leeds, he drives daily as he lives quite far from the train station ( remember to factor that in) he is lucky as he persuaded his employer that he should work 10 til 6 so misses most of the traffic. He can park at work one week in three but Bradford have a lot of all day car parking at £2/£3 per day.
Why not look at spare room.com and try a few areas before buying?
  • Another one for Saltaire - I love it there, I make a detour to go to the mills whenever I am near enough

Try and spend some time up here before having a look round OP - I don't think Pudsey is that nice, there are definitely nicer places you could get somewhere for £220k. Guiseley would be worth a look.

Definitely have a look at Saltaire, easy train access, nice heritage buildings, lovely little community, what more could you want.....lived there a few years ago and was gutted to move, only moved a bit further out because you can't get a house with a large garden!

gozaimasu, your post has reminded me of when I used to drive daily from one side of Bradford to another, my mouth would be hanging open at the insane driving that went on. Twice people ran into me on that ring road, awful place to drive.

Having read that the OP likes where they are in Bristol,it doesn't seem the most natural fit.

I've heard North Street in Bristol called many things but never a lovely little community with heritage buildings.

Out of interest what is the approx. cost the daily commute from some of these smaller towns into Bradford by train...southern prices and a journey of 30 mins would run into the thousands if that commute were for example from Bristol to Cheltenham which I'm guessing is a similar journey time wise.

Oh.....to be honest I have never been to Bristol so no idea what it's like, I'm just assuming everybody likes a bit of community and heritage, probably incorrectly! :rotfl:

I commute from Bingley to Leeds every day (23 minutes) and a monthly train ticket is £104.
