Hi FTBAngst, I live on the outskirts of Bradford and can confirm there are some nice bits :) agree with others, best to avoid central Bradford. Have a look at Saltaire, Bingley, Baildon, Burley in Wharfedale as others have said - you will get a lot more for your money than on the outskirts of Leeds, all of these have train stations approx. 20 minutes into Bradford.

Saying that, depends what you want and what stage of life you are in - if you want the city life on an evening with lots of restaurants and night life, Leeds would be better. If you like going on walks in the country, come join us with a BD postcode!

Agree with Beans - Wyke is nice, about 4 miles out - but yes, if you want the night life Leeds is your best bet

Personally, I would stay in Bristol and look for a new job there.

House prices there are expensive for a reason!

What you gain in cheaper house prices ooop north, you lose by probably not being able to afford to move back to Bristol if you wanted to.
  • There's a very reliable train line into Bradford, which makes the city centre within 30 minutes commute of a lot of decent places to live. £220k is quite a big budget for the area. All these are nice:

    Greengates ( 15 mins) Saltaire (15 mins), Bingley (20 minute), Baildon (15 minutes), Burley-in-Wharfedale (20 mins), Ilkley (25 mins).

Closer to Bradford, these areas are decent - Clayton, Thornton, Wrose, Nab Wood, Sandy Lane. Avoid inside the ring road in my opinion.

That would be ideal but in this situation not possible. I guess I’m choosing future prospects over current living location.

This is all really helpful everyone. I applied for the same position in Bristol but haven’t been successful. I currently live 2-3miles from the city centre but only 1.5miles from North street which is plenty walkable. So I think commuting from Leeds will be a good shout

Thanks for all your replies. I feel like there is some hope!

I grew up in Bristol, and I now work in Bradford, but I live in a village near Wakefield. I drive to work which takes about 45-50 mins each way in rush hour. We bought here because we wanted to be nearer to family.
Before that we rented a house in a town called Cleckheaton, just south of Bradford and Leeds. Not a bad area, but wasn't for us as a "forever home".
I really like Bradford (despite its poor reputation), but Leeds is much more similar to Bristol, and is still affordable (in comparison to Bristol). Somewhere like Pudsey would be good as you can very easily travel to both Leeds and Bradford from there.

Bradford like all cities has a mixture of neighbourhoods, good & bad. The city centre is slowly going through a revival but has a long way to go.

Your £220000 budget opens up a whole world of small towns & villages all commutable to Bradford & Leeds by train (driving in Bradfords rush hours can take forever, too many cars & insufficient roads). To the North East there is Ilkley, Burley in Wharfdale & Menston. North West there is Shipley, Baildon, Saltaire, Bingley, Crossflatts, Keighley (does have some nice parts) Silsden/Steeton. To the South & South West there is Halifax (& all the stops on that line.

Of course you may not be bothered with all that commuting by train mullarkey and in that case I would live in the following areas Wyke, Wibsey, Clayton, Queensbury (though gets very cold in Winter), Idle, Thornton, Wrose, Denholme, Haworth, Cullingworth, Harden, Cottingley. To confuse things Drighlington to the South (& only 4miles from Bfd city centre is part of Leeds city council area). Next to Drig is Birkenshaw again 4miles from Bfd city centre (yet comes under Kirklees/Huddersfield council)

Is it just you that is relocating or is there a family as well?

    Thats about all for now.

West Yorkshire is the most dangerous place to live in all of England. That doesn't mean there aren't nice areas, of course there are - Bradford is not one of them.

If you are happy to commute you'll be fine.

Really? Do you have a link for that?
I would have expected it to be London, Liverpool or Manchester.
