    Hi Tim,
Keep looking information from this thread:http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1026667&page=36, knowing that dual sided memory foam+pocket sprung will be most suitable for me. However, as we live in N.I., it's very hard to find any dual sided memory foam+pocket sprung mattress in local retailer.Although we can find it on-line, no company deliver to N.I. Do you think that the single sided(no turn) one will be the only choice?
All we had tried and we like so far in the local retailer are
    1.Healthopaedic Supreme Vasco 1500 (Healthopaedic) £560:eek:
    2.Cumfilux Indulgence 1200 Deluxe Mattress£520:eek:
My back is hurting now and later maybe my pocket.............
I know you can't recomment any brand or particular mattress......but I really not good on searching on-line, do you know any other manufacture besides La Romantica and Apollo do daul sided memory foam+pocket sprung mattress?
:embarasse I only discover Apollo today after 2 weeks searching....
    Thanks a million

How much do you want to pay? Did you ask your local retailer what was his best price?
  • I didn't ask for their best price yet because these were my very first time to try on. And I keep searching around for any dual sided mattress.I still haven't decided what and which mattress yet.

I would be interested to know who you work for then, because good quality memory foam does last.

It appears from what you say that the manufacturer you work for doesn't make sprung/memory foam mattresses then?

who I work for is irrellevant, a good mattress should last 20 years, how can foam last that long?

    Hello KwanTei,

I can sympathise with your predicament but hopefully I can shed some light.

I was in a similar position with acute spinal problems and a memory foam mattress was advised. After researching the market I found the range of memory foam mattress' available within NI all came with various prices. There is the old saying 'you get what you pay for' but this doesn't strictly apply.

Memory foam mattress' range from £200 - £3000 depending on what combination is being used, ie: all foam/pocket spring/additional fibres etc. What I found was that the cheapest are to be avoided, such as toppers, and the dearest are really over priced.

One of the qualities of a memory foam mattress is that they are 'non-turn' and this was what initially appealed to me as I would be unable to turn one with my condition. So to help with your search for a dual sided MF+pocket sprung mattress I would suggest its unnecessary. I researched dual sided before deciding and, as i previously mentioned, they fell in to the category of over-priced and surved no better function than a standard foam on spring mattress.

I finally decided on a 1200 pocket sprung MF mattress and I am very happy with my choice. I would reccommend a 'visco-elastic mattress' and a 'V60' is the best for contoured support and perhaps up to 1500springs but again any more is reall unnecessary.

Your prices outlined above sound very competitive as I paid £650 for the 1200 Indulgence so you are doing well. I have had my mattress for over three years now and its like the day I bought it, again why I opted for the visco-elastic foam as it is more durable.

My sleep has been completely reformed and I hope you find the same results. I hope this will help.

Sorry I don't want to shoot you down in flames after your long and detailed reply. However there is one thing you got wrong:

A mattress being non turn is not a quality. They have actually done nothing to the inside of the mattress to make it last longer without turning it. In fact you could take a two sided mattress an never turn it, and it would last just as long as a non turn one.

There is one reason why most memory foam mattresses are non turn. It is nothing to do with convenience (although they will try and tell you this), it is because the memory foam is the most expensive part of the mattress. So if they only put it on one side then it reduces production costs by a huge amount.

Remember, most of the sources for your research will be written by either bed manufacturers, bed retailers, or other people connected with the bed industry. So because very few companies manufacture 2 sideed pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses, so the bed industry aren't going to promotr them are they?

If they don't sell two side pocket sprung/memory foam in Northern Ireland, then you would be better off with pocket sprung only.

Because memory foam is made from lots of holes rather than lots of bubbles like reflex foam. In reflex foam the bubbles eventually burst so the mattress will gradually lose it's support. With memory foam the air just passes in and out of the very small holes, so doesn't put stress on the structure.

So which mattress company do you work for then??

Have you tried to turn one of these mattresses. They weigh a tonne. Im not able to rotate my mattress without help never mind have to turn it. Personally I find the convenience of not turning suits me, and I know of a lot of people less able than I able that are not able to turn mattresses, so maybe it costs less to make it, but for most people, having the memory foam on one side, is all they need. Especially since a lot of people like myself have a sore back and lifting a heavy mattress is out of the question.

I fully understand your situation, but I think you are missing the point I was trying to make. What I am saying is that non turn mattresses are a gimmick. And in most cases they don't charge any less because they only put quilting on one side, in fact I've actually known companies to charge more and tell people that it costs more to make non turn mattresses.

I'm sure you could ask a friend to help you turn your mattress once every few weeks?

Even non turn mattresses must be rotated lengthways, otherwise they just won't last.
  • i really dont agree ..... i dont want to turn a mattess .... so if a manufacturer put the memory foam on both sides this is a total waste. My last pocket sprung mattress cost only slightly less than the more recent memory foam on pocket springs. From my experience to date they will both last the same length of time. If you buy a good quality pocket sprung mattress with memory foam it will last the same length of time as a pocket sprung.

Out of interest how long do you expect a mattress to last?
