Hi all! I have now been retired, semi-retired or unemployed since April 2019, when I left my last job (to take a few months off!) The squirrelled supply is holding up very well, in fact I am facing the issue of still be reluctant to utilise them. Wanted to change my phone to get one with a better camera and despite being comfortably able to afford a new one, I have bought a refurb. I fear I am a basket case when it comes to spending, too many years squirrelling.
Anyone else got the same problem??
But just think, you've saved that phone from landfill !!!
But yes, being a lifelong squirreller is a hard habit to break. It's just a mindset. Why spend more than you need to?
TBH, when it comes to tech, I'd probably buy 2nd hand too, as I already have ancient tech (by todays standards) so I could still upgrade by quite a few models (phone, laptop, tablet) and still get a really good one, for a fraction of the price of new. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)3 -

We bought a pair of landline phones (do people really still use them?!) earlier in the year, and we chose the refurbed/returned option. Nothing wrong with them, and it saves them being discarded.

We do have quite a lot of tech but the 'puters are mostly ancient. Mum was about to take her old laptop to the tip after buying a new one - it was way better than any of ours so we took it off her. It needed a new power supply as she had already binned/lost that, and a replacement of the SSD (taken from one we were going to retire) and a bit more memory. A quick regedit and it is now happily running Windows 11. One of the 2 laptops we no longer needed was still running Windows 7! Before our trip to the tip we offered them on our local Buy Nothing FB group - they were snapped up by a local mechanic as lots of the diagnostic software he used wouldn't run on later versions. The other thing in our household is the make do and mend mindset. I will never pay for anybody to do anything unless I'm absolutely convinced I can't do it myself. Luckily, I am extremely practical when it comes to building work/DIY, but I also service and repair the cars (all six incl kids) - it's amazing what you can learn on Youtube!, also do all the extensive gardening and have no less than 6 chainsaws and harvest more firewood than I know what to do with. My wife wouldn't dream of paying someone to take up trousers or curtains and fortunately she's a bit of an IT wizard, so keeps all the computers, phones and gadgets going long after they deserve to be still working.
Financially, we don't need to do any of this, but it's so satisfying and hopefully does our bit to help save the planet (well, apart from the log-burner maybe!).4 -

I'm clearly not cut out for this squirrelling malarkey.....
FAR too much tech here & at holiday cottage (robomowers, apple macbooks/phones throughout...added a mesh wifi in a black friday deal, along with a couple more blink cameras for security....). Not to mention the stupidly expensive microwave to precisely fit the gap of the ancient broken one (I told you not to mention that). At least we used a chunky £300 of TopCashBack (built up over many years & forgotten!) to ease the pain of that purchase 😱
I *am* getting better.
Honest 👀
Just this week, I negotiated 3 of our 4 mobiles down from £30pcm (with 8, 8 & 7GB data) down to £25 (each with 20GB) 💪
It's the monthlies that'll kill ya!

We've put about £15 credit on our PAYG mobiles between us this YEAR!!!
And we've still got most of it left!!! 🤣🤣🤣How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)1 -

We've had two recent occasions where the 8 & 7GB ones ran out of data (not always possible to be on wifi, and all of us are pretty active users of the tech)
I also doubt you spend £94 pcm on Virgin Media *and* more on Disney+ and Netflix 😱....although given your goal for £22k in '22, I really think you should 🤣
Get Back (Beetles documentary by Peter Jackson on Disney+) is superb, if you need teasing in!
Remember....it's only money 🤪
