    Update. My dad visited the travel agent again when passing it and spoke to someone who seemed like she was the senior member of the staff at the branch. She said the chances of seats together being cancelled is tiny and that she wouldn't expect it at all.

    Nope because orignially the travel agents made it sound as if it was something quite likely to happen.

    i.e. did you hear what was said and the tone used?
    Or do you only have a second hand interpretation from your Father?
    Reading your initial post it sounds like you weren't there.

    No travel agent or airline would be able to guarantee 100% that you'd get the seats you paid for.
    Even if the carrier hadn't been changed.
    Based on what you've already said about your Father, I can imagine how the conversation went.
    The 'chances of seats together being cancelled' is probably 'tiny'.
    But not guaranteed.
