Probate Delays

Very helpful thanks. Did you submit IHT400 electronically or as a paper copy. I thought IHT400 had to be in before you could apply for probate?? - There was a question "How was the inheritance form submitted" when I tried to do it. What did you put down as the probate office on IHT421 or is that one of the forms you need to get the online compatible version of?
Answering my own question - Paper version of IHT400 sent in (no online version to my knowledge) with IHT421. Same day I applied for probate on line and posted the will. Some talk of 20 days - but I think that is working days so ~ a month. I will wait and see - I certainly hope it is closer to that than 20 weeks!!
Hope things resolve soon Kelda1.:(0 -
My timescales are this ( using a solicitor )
IHTC submitted 2nd May. HMRC didn't return the certificate until July.
Probate forms submitted 5th July
As of 23/8/2019 Winchester probate have said they are dealing with applications received on 28th June. hopefully they will start looking at mine this week.
Their sla's are 7 to 9 days - so looking at mid September.
I appreciate all the reasons for the delays - however, had it been the other way around and I owed them money I'm sure they wouldn't have accepted this timescale from me0 -
Have been keeping an eye on this forum for a while and reading through other people’s experiences on here -hoping that the probate that our family are waiting for will be through any day. But alas we are still waiting, having submitted the application in April and now approaching end of August.
It’s abysmal service from the probate offices and the HM Courts and tribunal service and the Government, these are grieving families, with estates and finances, inheritance tax bills, houses to sell and debts all to sort out after a loved one has passed and to then have to wait for an excessive amount of time for probate is like a kick in the teeth and No apologies or admission from the probate registry offices that they have messed up.
If you are still waiting I urge you to make contact with law society (won’t let me post link as new user but link can be found on page 1 of this forum) as previously posted on here by another user- thank you for that as they have been very helpful and really want to get these issues resolved.
I hope you all aren’t left waiting any longer and can move on and continuing grieving in peace.0 -

Are you sure the delay is caused by HMRC?
In many cases, delay is with the Probate Registry rather than HMRC0 -
It took less than three weeks for HMRC to issue the IHT301 and 421; however, it is now over four weeks later and we are still awaiting probate. Still within the stated target time of eight weeks, so fingers crossed that it will be granted very shortly.0

I'm puzzled by the fact that the probate office we sent our application to (Harlow) does not appear on the probate search page, so I can't get any idea of the delay at that office. I even tried searching for the death of "John Smith" assuming that would have to bring up every office, but still no Harlow.
What am I missing?0 -

sorry i didn't re-read my post its not HMRC I should have actually said it’s the Governments appalling service as both HMRC, the probate registry and the HM Courts and Tribunal service operate on behalf of the government. Either way it’s shocking and needs sorting out. Read somewhere today that they underestimated their numbers and actually delays are getting longer!0 -

I applied on line for Probate and was told to send the will to Harlow. They seem pretty efficient as I got an email today to say they had received the Documents - the soonest they could have received them was yesterday. In the email they quote 8 weeks as the current time to fully process the application.0 -
Wills and Probate on Gov.uk say Probate has been granted for my application made on April 18th from the Newcastle registry. So a 19 week wait in total! Good luck to those still waiting.0

Harlow is a sub-registry; only the names of the 12 district registries appear in the probate search results.0
