Third year student applying for first student bank account

Hi everyone.

So the thing that nobody tells you about student banking is that if you don't open a student account in the first year of your course then you can not apply for one if you change your mind a year down the line!
Ive just completed my second year and due to a change in circumstances now need to open a student bank account and get the overdraft that comes along with it.

But no, apparently its impossible to do so! No banks will accept new account opened by 2nd or 3rd years. Some wont even let a person in their 1st year open on after 5 months of being at uni!

I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation for this but it seems pretty dumb to me.

Or maybe anyone can give some advice on what to do? I really need an overdraft and would prefer a cheap student one than a regular overdraft with my bank. I currently bank with Santander and have been in for an appointment to switch my current account to a student account which is how i found out about this ridiculous restriction.

Are there any accounts which will allow a 2nd/3rd year to apply for a new student account? I've been on a few banks websites but they're no help at all.

Thanks for your help!
