Thanks Annie, I don't have any milton fluid or sterilising tablets so I have washed the hot water bottle in very hot water and just waiting for kettle to boil to put hot water in that.0

And I bet it's called Harry!! lol!!!0

If it's something you get regularly, a UV filter can help with it.0

If you want a Nitrate filter, chuck in a bit more sand/ gravel. The bottom of it should turn black, which means it has de-nitrifing bacteria in it.
There are plenty of sites that will detail how to make a cheap diy external nitrate filter too. You can make one by coiling airline tubing round in a plastic bottle. Or you can make one using conservatory roof panels like these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GREENHOUSE-POLYCARB-SHEET-1504mm-x-610mm-x-4mm-Twinwall_W0QQitemZ130186592689QQihZ003QQcategoryZ42153QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting0 -
To be honest our shop housing about 30 tropical tanks had a power cut all of saturday but it made no difference, I imagine you have the central heating too? I don't think it will matter too much as it is only a short period of timeHelp me to help you :santa2:0

Thanks Robert, I was in a bit of a panic earlier. I've got the central heating on, put an electric heater on in the room and closed the door. I've just refilled the hot water bottle I placed inside the tank. I did put a duvet over the tank but then took it off thinking the tank would benefit more from the heat 'directly' if you know what I mean.
I'm off to get a heater first thing in the morning so I hope the fish would have survived the night. The temperature seems to be stable at 22 degrees centigrade.0 -
It might be a good idea to buy a spare as well.
I have had one for six years and never needed it, but that's the way it goes.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
An update:
The fish survived yesterday and last night and when I went in the room to check on them this morning it was roasting in there and the temperature was 28 degrees centigrade on the tank. A bit too warm, but I reduced the heating and they all seemed happy.
I got a water heater today and now temp is a steady 26 degrees cent, and pleased to say the fish are happy and so am I! lol! Thank you all for your replies.0 -
I've always wanted them. I don't want a large tank, a small to medium is fine. What i wanted to know is once set up, do they take much cost to look after? Such as with the lighting and heating?0
