Thanks buffy. We forgot to ask the vet this morning, but thankfully the whitespot seems to be clearing up. Its the 6th day now, they had to have the treatment on day 1,2,3 and 6. So they've just had the 4th lot of drops. There a lot livelier now too, so fingers crossed they're on the mend.

yep, careful tho, it can come back ! I hate it, if it does try a different brand of treatment, but hopefully it will be ok.
I just lost three goldfish, unknown illness, water all fine. so disappointing.
good luck

Hi fish tank got damaged moving so fish now in the bath!
Have decided to build a fish pond for big goldfish, but until its finished and the water suitable I need to put them in something. Cant stay in the bath.
I have 4 fish from 3" to 8",
New tank would be very expensive and not needed after, so I was thinging of something 3x2 or 4x1 as a min.
Any ideas...I wondered if something in the building industry eg: big plastic thing!!0 -
Hi Annie.Don't envy you digging a pond this time of year!! Good on you for wanting to improve their living conditions,i moved mine into a pond years ago and now have 2 large ponds and over 100 fish so beware!!
Maybe a header tank,(black plastic tank ) from any plumbing merchants might suit.Have you tried finding out whether any local aquarists would house them for a short while?.Try this site and ask here as there are many experts very willing to give advice.I am sure someone will have a better idea than me.

There still hanging on, touch wood we havent lost any yet, but some days they look more lively than others. The OH went to our local aquatics store yesterday and he was advised to give them a 2nd course of the treatment, they had the last days treatment of the first course yesterday, so we're gonna start it again tomorrow. Fingers crossed this will be enough to save them.

From my OH;
Yes it is unusual as the filters aren't just for filtering they are storage for healthy bacteria that the fish and tank need to survive. This is only a personal opinion but i have found that waste from the tank builds up within the filter material over a period of approx one year which i have found that the bacterial doesnt survive as well after this period. This will of course differ on the type and amount of fish that are actually kept within the tank at any one time. Understandable you wash them out in tank water which will help. I congratulate you on keeping your filters in such good condition.
As i said, he's the fish keeper not me-its his hobby (or should i say obsession lol!) It seems you're not having any problems though!
Keely.
With an answer like that and you say he's the fish keeper!!!
Well I'll bet youv'e got some healthy fish tanks (or aquariums as I like to call them:rolleyes: )in your house!
Any way thanks for the advice, and I shall make it my new year resolution to gradually change all 4 filters in the coming year.
BTW any thoughts on the nitrate filters as you seem so clued up on fishkeeping?
All the best:beer:0 -
Do you have any nitrate problems?
If you dont then it may not be worth it.
As for the filters, they advise to repalce them every few months ( i think its a money making exercise) when i had my juwel tank (which has gone to my dads) i never replaced the filters (and im sure my dad hasnt either, and thats nearly 9years now im sure!)
The only filter worth replacing is the white floss filter (it polishes the water , but gets clogged quickly) (and dont buy juwels brand, by a big bag from the fish keeper)

If you're not having any problems-i wouldn't bother with one of those nitrate filters...as someone said if it isnt broken don't fix it? lol. Do you have a test kit? If everythings ok, why worry over nothing? Dont spend money on something that isnt needed
keely.
ps-I only wrote down what my husband told me, i dont really know much about fish keeping honestly! He has his fish, i have a hamsterMommy to Elliot (5) and Lewis (born xmas eve 11!)0 -
I have tropical fish in a tank and the heater has just broken at a weekend, of all the worst times to happen!
I can't get to a pet shop until Monday and wondered what is the best way to keep the fish warm until then? I'm going to wrap the tank in a duvet and put an electric heater on in the room to keep the tank as warm as possible. Any other suggestions?0 -
I've used a very clean hot water bottle in the past in a large tank, kept my guppies happy.
if its a small tank... warm water in a clean milk bottle...plastic ones.
I use milton fluid first then rinse in a little tank water.

ps know nothing about sharks...sorry0
