that is working, thank you, i was told to click select, not download.
so windows 8.1 downloading, but there was no version pro+core?
You were told to click SELECT, because you made the choice to download the .iso separately.
I supplied the link to Windows 8.1 Update 3 to you, twice already. So it appears that you haven't bothered to download it.

you told me to click either on the github rufus link, or, your microsoft link, your microsoft link didn't work both times i tried it, even when i tried it just 1 hour after you pm ing the new link. so i had to do this via the first github rufus link.
i told you your links were not working. i think what you are saying is a bit harsh.
here is what you told me to do:
You have two options:
You can use Rufus to do everything for you; https://github.com/pbatard/rufus/releases/download/v3.6/rufus-3.6.exe
Instructions here: https://www.ghacks.net/2019/03/18/rufus-3-5-with-windows-10-and-8-1-download-option/
Choosing Windows 8.1 with Update 3 (build 9600) > Windows 8.1 Pro + Core
Alternatively, you can download the image directly from my link
Windows 8.1 with Update 3 Pro + Core

Once downloaded, plug in a USB Flash drive and then download and run(double click on the downloaded file); https://github.com/pbatard/rufus/releases/download/v3.6/rufus-3.6.exe
and choose the Select function on Rufus, Once you choose Select, a Windows Explorer box will open in so that you can navigate to where you have downloaded the image. Double click on the image to enter it into the Rufus interface0 -

Of course if you have already successfully downloaded and created the media via Rufus, there is no need for you to download it again manually.0

with the help from the wonderful Everywhere the new pc is now up and running !!!i have windows 10 pro on the ssd, formatted the hdd, installed epic browser and spybot - anti beacon.
i have a couple of questions so i don't know if i should start a new thread, let me know if i should.
so, is there other stuff i should install for anti virus, malware, etc.? ( on my previous pc i used ccleaner everytime , had avast antivirus with its password maker, and ran defrag and malewarebytes periodically).i really don't want the pc clogging up with junk and caches which don't ever clear).
Also everywhere rec'd to defer windows updates, how long should i defer them for?
i know i will need something to open pdf files in, something i can write letters in, and a thing to receive emails. i previously used foxit reader for pdfs . any recs will be appreciated. and have i forgotten anything?
thank you .0 -
Windows 10 can open PDF natively. You already have Windows Security installed. No need for another antivirus solution.
Ccleaner is here; https://download.ccleaner.com/slim/ccsetup560_slim.exe
Windows Mail is an App you can use for email. Alternatively, I already advised you about Microsoft Office
No need to Defrag an SSD.
You can delay normal updates for seven days and Feature Updates for a month, as an example.0 -
I have used Sandboxie for years.
Sandboxie runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer.

I started using adwCleaner (now owned by Malwarebytes)
I manually scan once a week.
